George Hanham was born in the Village of Blackford, Somerset, England.

Biography

George was born on the 11 January 1836 in the Village of Blackford, 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of the Town of Wincanton, and north of the Village of Milborne Port, in the Parish of Blackford in South Somerset, England. He is the son of Charles Hanham and Susannah "Susan" Babstock. It was noted in a family diary that George could neither read or write and so Annie organised the business details.

Baptism

His baptism took place on the 14 February 1836 at the Parish Church of Saint Michael, in the Village of Blackford, 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of the Town of Wincanton, and north of the Village of Milborne Port, in the Parish of Blackford in South Somerset, England[1].

Immigration

At the age of 16 years, he immigrated to Australia aboard the vessel "SS Great Britain", leaving the Port of Liverpool, on the river Mersey, in Lancashire, England on the 21 August 1852. He is travelling with Mr James (Hanham) and his wife, possibly relatives of his. They arrive in Port Phillip Bay, City of Melborne, Victoria, Australia on 12 November 1852[2].

Residence

We find George, on the night of the Census Record of 1841, living with his parents Charles (Hanham) and Susannah "Susan" (Babstock); siblings Joseph and Mary (Hanham) and Agricultural Labourer George (Whiteman) at Blackford Street, in the Village of Blackford, near Wincanton, Wincanton District, Somerset, England[6]. However, by 1851, he has lost his mother Susannah "Susan" (Babstock) and is living with his widower father, Charles (Hanham) and siblings Mary and Elizabeth (Hanham) at Mead Cottages, in the Village of Blackford, Wincanton District, Somerset, England[7]. In 1903, George (Hanham) has married Anne "Annie" (Bryson) and the couple live with their children Annie Bryson, Mary Ethel and Susan Babstock (Hanham) at 948 Lygon Street, North Carlton, City of Melbourne, Carlton North Subdivision, Northern Melbourne Division, Victoria, Australia[8].

Occupation

In the Census of 1841, George's occupation was recorded as being an Agricultural Labourer but with his emigration to Australia, he initially worked in Moorabbin, in the City of Melbourne, taking farm produce to the Victoria Markets. Then, using bullocks, then horses, he ended up with many carriages when he started to transport supplies to the gold fields in central Victoria. However, by the time of his death, George was described as a "Gentleman".

Death/Burial

George (Hanham) passes away on the 26 October 1908 at his residence, "Summer Hill" 948 Lygon-street, North Carlton, in the City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He was 72 years old at the time and the cause of death will be recorded on the Death Certificate[9]. His burial takes place on the 27 October 1908 at the Melbourne General Cemetery, College Crescent, Parkville, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The location of his grave is at MGC-WES-Comp-H-No-40[10].

Will/Probate

It is noted in his Will dated 18 June 1908 that George and Annie had amassed 13 properties, mostly in Carlton. His Probate takes place at the Supreme Court of Victoria, in the City of Melbourne on the 28 May 1909 and is granted to Beneficiary, Annie (Hanham), the widow[11].
