John Hanbury, of Kidderminster; ‘youngest son’, mentioned in his father’s will dated 1657; ?occurs Hearth Tax returns for Feckenham, 1664/5.[1]
He was b. about 1635 (no record at St Nicholas, Gloucester, but b. after birth of an elder brother John, who was bur. 2nd Sept 1634); d. after 1685 (Mayor of Clonmel; no burial record found).[2]
As given in ‘Key Pedigree W’ in The Hanburys of Kidderminster and Bridgnorth[3](A.A. Locke, 1916).
Richard Hanbury Tenison states that this John Hanbury settled in Ireland, where he was Mayor of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, 1685, and left descendants seated at Laracor, Trim, Co. Meath [4], where Jonathan Swift was rector. Sir James Arthur Hanbury, surgeon (b. 1832; d. 1908) was of this line.
A.A. Locke states: ‘The enigmatic character of the John Hanbury of Kidderminster in question precludes any certainty as to the descent... His father, John Hanbury, acquired property in Kidderminster... It is not impossible that he may have had a first family in Worcestershire, and a second family in Ireland. That the two families in question are members of the Hanbury family proper is borne out by their having in their possession old slver stamped with the Hanbury crest, and old seals with the Hanbury crest and the whole arms.’ [5].
