Biography

John James Hamilton was the son of the Honourable John Hamilton and Harriet (Craggs) Hamilton.[1][2] He was born in 1756.[1][2]

He became the Member of Parliament for East Looe, Cornwall, England, in 1783, and the Member for St Germans, Cornwall, in 1784. He succeeded his uncle James Hamilton as Earl of Abercorn in 1789 and entered the House of Lords. He was made Marquess of Abercorn in 1790.

In 1794, he was appointed to the Privy Council of Ireland.

He was married three times, firstly to Catherine Copley, daughter of Sir Joseph Copley, 1st Bt., and Mary (Buller) Copley, on the 20th of June 1779 at St. Marylebone Church, Marylebone Road, Marylebone, London, England.[1][2][3] She died in 1791.

John James Hamilton, Marquess of Abercorn, married, secondly, Lady Cecil Hamilton, daughter of the Honourable George Hamilton and Elizabeth (Onslow) Hamilton, on the 4th of March 1792.[1][2] They were divorced in April 1799 by an Act of Parliament.[1][2][4]

The Marquess of Abercorn married, thirdly, the Lady Anne Jane Gore, daughter of Arthur Saunders Gore, 2nd Earl of Arran of the Arran Islands, and Catherine (Annesley), Countess of Arran, on the 3rd of April 1800 in Piccadilly, London.[1][2]

He was made Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.), on 17 January 1805.[1]

He died on the 27th of January 1818 at the age of 61 at Bentley Priory, Stanmore, near Harrow, Middlesex, England.[1][2] He was buried on the 5th of February 1818 in Stanmore.[1][5]
