Reseach by Lou Poole has helped to give a better understanding of George and Frances' children. There were 3 different Hamilton families that were all contemporary in mid-late 18th century Guilford NC. Lou's research focuses mostly on the family of Hance Hamilton (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hamilton-19052). However, since the children of George Hamilton (this profile) have overlapping names with Hance's children, his research extended into that of the George/Frances Hamilton family. The third Guilford NC Hamilton family, of Thomas Hamilton and Jane McCracken, is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hamilton-2007. A list (with errors) of George and Frances' children is provided in Lou's research, with footnotes explaining the errors. The list follows:
"1. George Hamilton (2nd) 1742 – Born: circa 1742 in Lancaster County, PAd; Died: date not known, Davidson County, Tennessee; Married: Jane/Jeane Denny (1752-1790) the daughter of James Denny and Janis Edwards. She died in Davidson County, Tennessee.
Footnote: The implication here, by listing George first, is that he was the oldest son. Detailed review of primary-source records of Guilford County do not support this supposition. I believe this supposition was made to account for the presence of George Hamilton, son of Hance Hamilton of York County, in the Guilford County records. Thomas and William appear to have been the oldest sons of George Hamilton, Sr. The inclusion of John before William in this listing is caused by the same reason that George Jr. was listed first – people have heretofore been unaware of the four brothers coming to Guilford County from York County, Pennsylvania.
2. Thomas Hamilton 1744–1829 – Born 14 Mar 1744, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; Died 16 Sep 1829, Guilford County, North Carolina; Married: Margaret Newhouse?, born 1753, died 1803
3. John Hamilton 1746–1819 – Born: about 1746, Lancaster County, PA; Died: 25 Jan 1819 in Giles County, Tennessee; Married Elizabeth Archere, born 1757 in Baltimore, MD, (daughter of James Archer and Katherine Mortimer) on 25 Oct 1774 in Guilford County, NC
Footnote: George and Frances Hamilton did have a son named John, but the John Hamilton who married Elizabeth Archer was the son of Hance Hamilton of York County, Pennsylvania.
4. Joanna Hamilton 1748 – Born 1748 in Lancaster County, PA; Died (date unknown) in Guilford County, North Carolina; Married Thomas Grier, (born about 1756 in County Donegal, Ireland, died 1839 in Guilford County, NC) on 23 Feb 1773 in Guilford County, NC
5. Robert Hamilton 1750–1833 – Born: circa 1750 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; Died: circa 1833/34 in Washington County, Arkansas; Married: (1) Jane Hannah (daughter of Andrew Hannah, Jr. and Mary “Polly” Fruit?) on 30 Aug 1792 in Knox County, Tennessee, Married: (2) Abigail (Robertson) Coleman, a widow, on 15 Feb 1822 in Sangamon County, Illinois. (Her daughter Jane Coleman married George Knox Hamilton, Robert’s son.)
6. Hance Hamilton 1752– Born: about 1752 in Lancaster County, PA; Died: probably in Guilford County, North Carolina Married: unknown
Footnote: As has been already noted, I can find no evidence that George and Frances Hamilton had a son named Hance
7. Elijah Hamilton 1753–1826 – Born: about 1753 in Lancaster County, PA; Died: 1826, Franklin, Williamson County, TN; Married: Mary Warmock (original family name was Warmack) on 14 Aug 1786 in Guilford County, North Carolina
8. William Hamilton 1754–1785 Born: 1754 Guilford County, North Carolina Died: 1785, Davidson County, Tennesseeb; Married: Mary/Marry Coots No Children
Footnote 1: No! He died in Guilford County, North Carolina, as the enclosed will shows.
Footnote 2: Many people assert that William Hamilton’s wife was Mary Archer, daughter of James Archer. As will be discussed herein that assertion is not true.
9. David Hamilton 1756–1841 – Born: 3 Feb 1756, Guilford County, North Carolina; Died: Nov 1841 in Gibson County, Tennessee; Married: (1) Hannah Porter in Guilford County, NC; she died on 11 Oct 1792, (2) Susan Hicks
10. James Hamilton 1756–1816 – Born: 3 Feb 1756, Guilford County, North Carolina; Died: 1816, Wilson County, TN; Buried: Sugg’s Creek Cemetery; Married: Margaret Brown (first cousin, daughter of Col. James Brown, Fanny’s brother)
11. Hannah Hamilton 1758–1816 – Born: 1758, Guilford County, North Carolina; Died: circa 1816 in Nashville, Davidson County TN; Married John Porter on 23 Mar 1773 in Guilford County, NC (John Porter was born about 1750; he was killed May 1780 by Indians at Eaton’s Station on the Cumberland River; this event was referenced in the diary of John Donelson.)
12. Eleazar Hamilton 1760–1793 – Birth: circa 1760 in Guilford County, North Carolina; Death: March 1793 near White's Creek, north of the Cumberland River, Nashville, TN Burial: Probably ‘Craighead Meetinghouse’ now Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville, TN; Married: Mary Gray born ?, died 1823 in Davidson County, Tennessee, (daughter of Alexander Gray of Guilford, North Caro-lina)
13. Joseph Hamilton 1763– Born: about 1763, in Guilford County, North Carolina; Died: unk. In Hempstead County, Arkansas; Married: Rachel unknown, born about 1775
14. Margaret Hamilton 1767–1842 – Born: 27 Jan 1765, Guilford County, NC; Died: 3 Apr 1842, Pope County, Illinois; Married: John Hanna (born 25 Dec 1764, died 7 Dec 1834) on 4 Jan 1787 in Guilford County, North Carolina"[6]
