Alexanderina Gunn (or Mackay), daughter of Alexander Gunn and Annie Mackay, was born about 1826 and was baptised in Watten, Caithness, on 4 February 1827.[1] The manner in which her baptism is recorded with two surnames implies that Alexanderina's birth was illegitimate. It seems likely that her parents were both related to the Gunn and Mackay families who also lived in Catchery during the 19th century (the place of residence at the time of her baptism)[2] - see the profiles of both parents for more information.
In 1851 Alexanderina was working as a servant for George Bremner and his mother who were living in Browns Street, Pulteneytown, Wick, Caithness. George's trade was "fish curer herrings employs 4 men".[3]
