On 5 Jun 1808 Robert Gray, born 13 Apr, 2nd son of William Gray (cordwainer, native of Sedgefield) by his wife Ann Middlemost (native of Sedfield [Sedgefield]) was baptised at South Shields, St Hilda. [3] This useful record tells us that both William and Ann were native of Sedgefield and that they had moved to South Shields by 1808 and that William was a cordwainer or shoemaker.
