"Two brothers, James and William Boulware, came to the colony of Virginia, almost certainly from England, around 1662. These two brothers bought a 783 acre tract of land in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia. (subsequently became Essex County, Virginia in 1692) on December 29, 1666. This purchase would indicate that the brothers were fairly prosperous and it is safe to assume that they, like most colonial landholders, were tobacco planters. They subsequently divided their land on December 19, 1674. In 1689, James purchased an additional 450 acres from Richard Dyson and in 1696 he bought 200 acres from his brother-in-law, Warwick Gray. Essex County records show that in 1715, James held 500 acres and his sons James Jr. and Mark, each held 225 acres. Clearly, James was a successful planter in his day. Sometime before July 20, 1673, James married Marjory Gray, daughter of William Gray. William Gray was a
CAPTAIN OF A SAILING VESSEL."

Notice that there are two sets of brothers: William and Abner. Both inherited land on Long Branch. Mrs. Goodnight (reference GOOD) wrote a very factual article and stated #3 below was the William who died in 1742. On the other hand, William named "cousin" Wm. Boulware as an Exor. in his 1742 will. William's 1742 will said "plantation whereon my Father dwelt & I purchased of my brother Abner Gray." The elder Abner (s/o Wm. d. 1673) died in 1717, which was before the 1723 & 1724 deed transactions between brothers Abner & William. The time line for Mary Dunn fits the younger William, s/o Abner.

↑ User-submitted genealogies on FamilySearch.org list Wm. as "William Butler Gray," son of Thos. Grey and marry him to Margaret/Annis Valentine. They have his father Thos., as the son of another Thos. Grey and wife Katherine Myles.[1]
Note that Margaret Annis Valentine married immigrant Thomas Graye, ancient planter of Virginia. He had a few sons named William. The first was born abt. 1622 and died young. He immigrated with his parents (his mother seems to be disputed but the ship log names her as "Margaret").
