Robert was born in 1800 in Drumquin, County Tyrone.[1][2] He married Isabella Wilson.[1][3] They had nine children.[1]
Finding the Potato Famine in Ireland too difficult to navigate, Robert and Isabella took their family to Pollockshaws, near Glasgow, in 1841 where they stayed for 6 years.[1] They emigrated to Canada via Quebec on the Anchor and then by steamer to Toronto, where they went by land to Burwick (now Woodbridge) where Robert's sisters, Mary (now Mary McAuley) and Martha were living.[1]
Robert died in 1847,[2] shortly after arriving in Burwick.[1] He had caught "ships fever" on the journey to Canada.[1]
