Herbert John, youngest son of William Gladstone and Catherine Glynne was born at Downing Street and christened at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster in 1854 [1] Educated at Eton College and University College, Oxford, he lectured in history at Keble College, Oxford for three years. In 1880 he became private secretary to his father and was elected Liberal Member of Parliament for Leeds.
He married Dorothy Mary, daughter of Sir Richard Paget, Privy Councillor, at St Andrew's, St. Marylebone in 1901 [2] The service was conducted by his brother Stephen. [3] They had no children.

In 1910 he was appointed Governor General of the Union of South Africa and in the same year was raised to the Peerage as Viscount Gladstone of the county of Lanark. He returned in 1914 and spent most of the following War years involving himself with various charitable organisations. He died at his home in Ware in 1930 aged 76 [5] and buried at All Saints, Little Munden Church, Ware [6] Probate on his will granted to his widow Dorothy and others 6 June 1930 [7]
