Biography

John Chesley Gilbreath was born in Pope, AR but moved with his parents to Erath County 4 years later as a member of the wagon train led by Chesley Turnbow along with 6 other families that settled at Resley Creek, near Dublin.

John married Lucy Barbee on 13 April 1870 in Erath, Texas, United States.[1]

Shortly after his mother Nancy Turnbow Gilbreath Barbee married Lucy's widowed father Jones Barbee, making his wife also his stepsister and his mother his stepmother-in-law. He and Lucy had 9 children.

J. C. Gilbreath was elected twice and served as the seventeenth sheriff of Erath Co., TX from December 22, 1882 until November 11, 1886. Sheriff Gilbreath was most noted for ending Erath County's era of mob/vigilante crime. His son Tom Gilbreath was later elected sheriff of Comanche Co., Texas, adjacent to Erath. J.C. returned to farming after the two terms as sheriff. In September 1894 he was found dead on the side of the road at age 43 after being run over by his runaway wagon loaded with 2000 lbs of cotton. He left behind a 1 month old son along with the other 8 children.
