Biography

George was born on 29th June 1840 in East Rainton, Durham, England to parents Ralph & Ann Gibson.^[1] He was baptised on 8th September 1840 at St Mary's Church, West Rainton, Durham.^[2]

On the 1841 census, George lived at East Rainton with his father, siblings, and Jane Elliott, who would become his stepmother the following year.^[3] George's mother Ann had died shortly after his baptism.

The 1851 census of South Tanfield, Durham shows George with his father and siblings.^[4]

In 1861, George lived at Crook & Billy Row, Durham, with his father and his second step mother.^[5]

George married Elizabeth Raffell at the Register Office, Auckland, Durham on 24th August 1867.^[6]

The 1871 census shows George with his wife Elizabeth and their two children Jane Ann (age 3) and Thomas (age 5mo) living at Tudhoe Colliery, Durham.^[7]

In 1881, George, Elizabeth and their family lived at Tudhoe, Durham.^[8]

The family lived at Tudhoe Colliery at the time of the 1891 census.^[9] They were recorded at Front Street, Tudhoe Colliery in 1901.^[10]

George, Elizabeth and two of their children lived at 70 Tudhoe Colliery, Spennymoor, Durham on the 1911 census.^[11] It recorded that they had been married for 44 years and had thirteen children born alive, with eight still living and five having died.

He died on 6th June 1927, at Tudhoe Colliery, Durham, aged 87 years^[12][13]. He was buried at Tudhoe Cemetery on 11th June.^[14]
