Biography

John was born in Suffolk county, New York, in 1841 to parents Samuel Buell and Mary (Thompson) Gardiner.

He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1863. He also served in the 16th Regiment, New York National Guard, during the Civil War attaining the rank of colonel.

John married Elizabeth Coralie Livingston Jones in 1870.

He became the 11th Proprietor of Gardner's Island and "Lord of the Manor," upon the death of his father in 1882 and with his older brother, David Johnson, relinquishing his birthright.

John passed away in 1910.

Descendant Of Lord Gardiner, Who Bought Island For a Song, Died at the Old Homestead

Colonel John Lyon Gardiner, lawyer, soldier and a direct descendant of Lord Lyon Gardiner, died to-day at his home on Gardiner's Island, which has been in uninterrupted possession of the family since 1639. He attended a private school until he was ready to be matriculated in Columbia Law School in the class of 1863. Upon the outbreak of the Rebellion he gave up his studies in college and enlisted. By successive stages of promotion he was made Lieutenant-Colonel of the 16th Regiment, 6th Brigade of the 2nd Division of the New York National Guard in 1868 he became Colonel of his regiment. He was 69 years old. Lord Gardiner bought the island from the Indians for one large black dog, one gun, a measure of powder and shot, a demijohn of rum and a few blankets, worth in all about $23. The island lies of Long Island, is nine miles long and contains about 3,300 acres. Funeral Service at East Hampton.
