Note
James was rector of the Bathgate Academy, West Lothian from 1836-1844, resigning to become House Governor of Heriot's Hospital where he was appointed as inspector of the schools Feb 1844.
A lead from the Gravestone Photograph Resource provided his parents, which led to finidng his baptism in Kelso, rather than Edinburgh where he thought he was born (no known siblings at this stage, but it is possible that his father was the son of a James & Helen (WOOD) FAIRBAIRN of Selkirk, then Edinburgh)[15][16][17][18][19]
