Research notes

Elizabeth's parents? Henderson-2297 01:43, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Although her death cert. shows her father as John Fairbairn, foreman (sand pit), given the census info showing her Smailholm origins and the baptism closest to the ages given in census records, it is likely that he is actually the James Fairbairn described as a road contractor in his son Robert's 1894 death cert.
James is assumed to have died between 1830 and 1841 so a son-in-law could be forgiven for getting his first name wrong in 1902.
A very quick search of ScotlandsPeople for marriages of a John Fairbairn and Janet Hunter (1800-1830, Roxburghshire only) did not turn up a couple of that name, nor any children in the same period to parents of those names.
Circumstantial evidence from the naming pattern of William & Elizabeth's children aids this id as her father being James, mother Janet.

Where was Elizabeth in 1841? Henderson-2297 01:43, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

Elizabeth would be 18 (if I've the correct baptism, 1823) or 15 by age from census data. So in theory rounded down to 15, and therefore shown as born 1826.
Possibly the 18 year old "F S in ag", Eliza Fairbairn in Legerwood, BEW, not born county, in hshold of Benjamin & Isobel Chisholm.
Possibly the 15 year old F(emale) S(ervant) in Edinburgh St Cuthberts, not born county, in hshold of either Peter Wood or James Gourlay?
Not the 14 year old ag lab in Oldhamstocks (daughter of) George and Elizabeth (Farr) Fairbairn
Not the 13 year old at Halfland House, Yetholm (daughter of) Henry and Margaret (Lough) Fairbairn
Not the 11 year old, presumed grandchild in Yetholm with Joseph YOUNG, tailor.

Which William Young was Elizabeth married to? Templeton-1883 18:13, 5 December 2021 (UTC)

The William Young originally linked as husband for Elizabeth cannot be her husband as he was born in 1841 in Chrichton, Midlothian - nine years before Elizabeth married. The William Young who is Elizabeth's husband in the census returns quoted was born in Prestonkirk, East Lothian around 1828.

Hi Holly

If you are interested in working Elizabeth's ancestry further back, despite what her death certificate says,* ie father John Fairbairn foreman (sand pit) mother Janet Hunter, I think a case can be made for this chap being her father https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fairbairn-1269 What do you think? James and Janet's son Robert's death cert shows his father as James, road contractor which doesn't contradict that, and her baptism at Smailholm fits census data for Elizabeth. Dth cert. is registered Canongate, Edinburgh, showing Elizabeth's address as 3 Willowbrae Grove. The informant was her son-in-law William M Harwood
