Biography

Nicholas Edgecombe, son of Peter Edgecombe and Elizabeth (Colwill) Edgecombe, was baptized at St. Andrew in Plymouth on June 21, 1612.^{[1][2][3][4][5]} He was his father's eldest son and his heir.^[3][4]

Nicholas's father died in 1621, when Nicholas was 9 years old.^[4] His mother married Thomas Dipford the following year.^[4]

Nicholas probably learned the craft of brewing from his step-father.^[4] In 1634 he bought properties from his step-father that were later called the "Malthouse" and by the late 1630's was probably the largest brewer in town.^[4]

Nicholas married Joan Beare/Bere.^[6][4] One marriage record states that they were married in Ermington, Devonshire in January 1633/4,^[6] while another states that they were married in an unspecified place in Devonshire in 1636.^[7] Based on the probable date of birth of their first child (1637), the latter date seems more probable. Nicholas and Joan had the following children:

5. Ann, bpt. June 4, 1643 at Plymouth St. Andrew,^[4] m. either John Young in 1662 or John Surraige in 1667/8^[4]
6. Joanna, bpt. February 16, 1644/5 at Plymouth St. Andrew,^[4] m. possibly Josiah Eendine in 1673^[4]
7. Samuel, June 4, 1646 at Plymouth St. Andrew,^[4]

Nicholas Edgecombe died and was buried at Plymouth St. Andrew on September 46, 1649.^[8][4][9][5] He died intestate.^[4] Converse has Nicholas living well beyond that date, marrying two subsequent times, and dying in 1702,^[3] but later research has shown that those later events belonged to Nicholas Jr.^[4]
