Biography

This profile is part of the Duke Name Study.
John Duke was born about 1725 to Benjamin Duke and his wife Mary (maiden name not known). John was a suspected Loyalist.
John married Esther, possibly née Kirkland. The surname for John Duke of Lancaster's wife is implied but not specifically named in the historical records. The records indicate they had three boys:
  • Elijah Duke (died early)
  • Moses Duke of Barnwell, South Carolina, married (1) Elizabeth Bensen and (2) Lurany
  • John Duke of Tattnall County, Georgia
and three or more daughters:
  • "proven" daughter Margarett who married Micajah Hughes
  • "proven" daughter Martha who married Isaac Hughes
  • "proven" daughter Ann who married William Arledge
  • "suspected" daughters: Harriet, Clarissa, Sarah (suspected to have married Loveless)
John Duke died before 1784 in Lancaster County, South Carolina.

The three sons were named in a neighbor's diary. Land transactions that happened right after John's death were used to make a list of suspected daughters. Moses Duke of Barnwell was one of the three executors of John Duke of Lancaster's probate, so the key land transactions were ones that Moses, his brother John, or the other two executors were involved with during the probate period of 1785-1800. Using land records was necessary because the probate happened in Lancaster County, SC, a burnt county so the will and other probate records no longer existed.

From the study linked below: "..During the late 1790s, there were several state land grants to unknown Duke women in Barnwell District, SC. They seem connected to the sons of John Duke of Lancaster. Elizabeth Dukes was granted 406 acres on Jack Savannah 23JUL1801. It was surveyed 04FEB1796. Harriot Duke was granted 150 acres on Toby's Creek 10SEP1796. It was surveyed 02MAR1796. On 15JUL1797 Claricy Dukes received her state grant for 106 acres on Fishing Branch of Hartless Creek. The survey was done on 10FEB1797. Finally, Charity Creel was granted 500 acres on 07MAY1800, originally surveyed for Elizabeth Duke on 28FEB1797. The grants were all next to, or near, one of the Duke men's land. Either Moses or John was issued a grant on each of the days the three Duke women received theirs. The wife of John Duke of Tattnall was named Elizabeth. It is possible that she was the Elizabeth Duke mentioned above. Several of the grants mention Thomas Loveless as a neighbor. Sarah Loveless witnessed several of the land sales by John and Moses Duke. Ann Duke witnessed another transaction.

Research Notes

The historical data suggest that John Dukes of Lancaster, Robert Duke of Fairfield, and Richard Duke of Edgefield (all in South Carolina) were brothers. Y-DNA results and an Autosomal DNA triangulation is consistent with the connection.[2]
  • Robert Duke of Fairfield (died 1785) married Nancy Unknown.[3]
  • Richard Duke of Edgefield
