Biography

This profile is part of the Duke Name Study.

Henry Jasper Duke was born in 1845. He is thought to be the son of Daniel Duke and Louisiana Richards.[1][2] He appears to have married Susan, the daughter of Ransom Duke.[1][3] Both Duke families had moved to Texas by 1873, when Susan passed away.[4] Henry was then married to Julia Twomey in 1880.[5][6][7] He was widowed again in 1913.[8] He passed away in 1928.[9][10]

DNA

One of Henry's male descendants tested into haplogroup R-M269. Ransom Duke's descendants are known to belong to haplogroup I-M170, proving that Henry could not be a son of Ransom. However, Henry's descendant has a close match to a descendant of John Byrd Duke, indicating that he and Daniel may have been the "Daniel Cooper" and "Bird Cooper" listed in the Shadrack Duke Bible as sons of Ransom's older sister, Sarah Duke. If so, then their yDNA may be from a Cooper paternal line rather than a Duke line.[1][11]

Research Notes

Extensive research and DNA testing have been done to determine Henry's lineage.[1] Although many have suggested that Ransom Duke may have been his father, it appears that he was actually his father-in-law (and possibly his great uncle).

The rest of Henry's family moved to Texas before 1870,[2][12][13] leaving him in Alabama with his wife living next to Ransom's family.[3][14] However, he and his brothers witnessed for each other on their Confederate pension applications.[15]
