Biography

Nancy Dickinson (Dickenson, sometimes Dickerson) was born 29 October 1773[1] in Bedford County, Virginia, probably very shortly after her father Joseph moved his family from Chesterfield County.

She married Jeffrey Robertson in Bedford County (bond dated 9 January 1792). They lived in Buckingham County until 1799, before moving permanently to Bedford County. They had several children (outlined in Jeffrey's profile).

She died on 30 June 1846 and was buried in the Old Dickerson Cemetery in Moneta, Virginia.[1]

Research Notes

The spelling of Nancy's surname in the marriage bond is incorrect. Her father (Joseph), grandfather (Joseph) and great-grandfather (Richard) all used Dickenson. See Chesterfield County DB 4, p. 675 and 677, also DB 7, p. 379. (The memorials for her parents have Dickinson).

There is no doubt that Jeffrey Robertson's father, Nicholas, lived in Chesterfield Co. before moving to Buckingham Co. c1787. There is also no doubt that Nancy's father, Joseph, lived in Chesterfield Co. before moving to Bedford Co. c1773. We also have property tax records for Jeffrey in Buckingham Co. before and after he married Nancy Dickenson in Bedford Co. in 1792. The question is how did Jeffrey and Nancy meet when they both apparently lived many miles apart prior to their marriage. The most likely explanation would be that their respective father's maintained close ties, perhaps business related, long after Joseph Dickenson left Chesterfield County. Joseph Dickenson's will does mention that he was a partner in the mercantile firm of Joel Shrewsbury & Co.
