STEALING TAILINGS. CASES AT KANOWNA. BEFORE THE COURT TO-DAY. (By Telegraph.) - Kanowna, This Day.
Henry Borshoom and James Eade, who were arrested on Sunday, charged with stealing tailings from various tubes on the alluvial lead, were brought up this morning before the warden. The evidence went to show that the defendants, having a poor claim, were in the habit of going round the rich men's ground and abstracting the valuable pug and wash left in the tubs overnight for soaking purposes prior to being treated. Nine witnesses were examined. When arrested Eade passed three matchboxes full of gold to a man named Oldfield, a stranger to both prisoners. James Eade, one of the prisoners examined by Mr. Hourigan, solicitor for the defence, said the gold was got from their own claim, excepting three slugs handed him by the other prisoner, Borshoom, for dollying purposes. Henry Borsham denied knowing anything of the whereabouts of Kelly and party's claim. The gold was sold by him to the Union Bank, and obtained by defendant during five years prospecting on the fields. The warden, after summing up, discharged Borshoom with a caution. With regard to Eade, the warden was assured of his guilt. The prisoner was sentenced to three months. An order was made that the gold in possession of the police be returned to the owners, namely, Kelly and party.
