Biography

Curtis Ulysses Damon was born on December 29th 1868 in Avilla, Missouri. He was the son of Solon Damon and Maria Trusler.

He married Minnie May Ford on October 30th 1892 at the Pine Ridge Agency, South Dakota by Thomas Smith Williamson, a missionary to the Indians. Pine Ridge Agency is about fifteen miles north of where they lived in Albany, Nebraska.

Minnie was the daughter of James and Mary (Resler) Ford. James was a shoemaker by trade.

Curtis and Minnie's children were;

  1. Elva May Damon (1895-1980)
  2. Raymond Solon Damon (1897-1996)
  3. Edith Fern Damon (1899-1977)
  4. Olive Myrtle Damon (1901-1982)
  5. Edna Pearl Damon (1902-1984)
  6. Claribel D Damon (1905-1979)
  7. Baby Girl Damon (1907-abt.1907)
  8. Ethel Lucille Damon (1909-1998)
  9. Leslie Lamar Damon (1913-2002)

Curtis and Minnie, along with his parents, moved to Bend, California in 1895. About the same time her parents moved to Corning, California. Curtis became the postmaster in Bend, California in 1897. In 1904 they moved to Oregon. First to Chitwood for a year or two, then Falls City until 1911, when they moved to Portland.

While living in Falls City he worked in the Toose General Store. In Portland, he was a streetcar conductor and he also raised award-winning Gladiolus flowers. From reading his journal, I can tell he loved learning. I found a newspaper article in the Chicago Tribune that he wrote at the age of sixteen.

Curtis passed on December 5th 1939 in Portland, Oregon.[1] [2]
