Solon Wright Damon was the first born child of Curtis C Damon and Lucia Damon. He was born in Windsor, Vermont on November 13th 1832. When he was about 5 years old his family moved to Milton, Saratoga County, New York. It was here that he grew to manhood.
In about 1861, Solon and his brother George headed west. On August 12th 1862 both Solon and George enlisted in the Union Army in Shabonna, Illinois. He was wounded and recovered in 1864 and was finally discharged on June 7th 1865. After the war, Solon, along with brother George, traveled home to visit family.
Solon married Maria Lydia Trusler in Charlotte, Michigan on September 27th 1865.[1] She was the daughter of George and Nancy Trusler. George was a blacksmith by trade from England and had also served in the Civil War.
After their marriage, Solon and Maria, along with her parents, moved to Avilla, Missouri. Here they had two sons; Curtis Ulysses Damon born on December 29th 1868 and George Frank Damon born on August 24th 1871. They then lived in Eureka Springs, Arkansas for a time before moving to Ainsworth, Nebraska.
In 1885 Solon bought land in Sheridan County, Nebraska. A daughter Myrtle Edith Damon was born on December 15th 1885 in Ainsworth.
They moved to their new land in Albany, Sheridan County, Nebraska. Albany was a small community north of Gordon, Nebraska. Very close to the South Dakota border. Here Solon was a farmer.
In 1895, having grown tired of the harsh Nebraska winters, Solon, Maria and Myrtle along with son Curtis and his wife and family sold their land in Nebraska and moved to The Bend, Tehama County, California.
Solon and Curtis had 20 acres in Bend where they were famous for their strawberries.
In 1904 Curtis sold his portion of the land and bought land in Chitwood, Oregon. About a month before Curtis and family were to move to Oregon, Solon and Maria's house caught fire and burned.
