Biography

England Orphan Team
Susan (Commons) Law has completed the England Project's Post 1700 Orphan Trail I.
Susan (Commons) Law is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Despite my place of birth, I was officially born British, which led to some interesting complications like having two birth certificates and the register with my baptism entry being classified until 2011 (it's now held by the UK National Archives).

After a roving childhood my family settled in Australia where I received a superb education in Physics. I'm now a naturalised Australian.

I worked in Scientific fields until my retirement, so I'm reasonably good at assessing evidence and building cases. My mother started researching our family trees in the hard old days of the 1980s. I took over in 2006, when the easy days of internet access to indexes and records were starting. Of relevance to Wikitree is that I completed a Diploma of Family History online at the University of Tasmania (2022).

The bulk of my antecedents were born south-east of the Fosse Way in England, but I also have a bit of Huguenot, Scots and Ashkenazi Jewish. I have a reasonably extensive library of resources, particularly of indexes and transcriptions and I'm happy to do lookups. Areas on which I have significant holdings are Suffolk, Kent, Sussex, the East End of London and Huguenot records. I also have some items on Norfolk and Warwickshire.

I have a Blog where i publish interesting bits and piece as well as proof studies for complicated parts of my family: Sue's Skeletons

I have joined the England Project and am now part of the Suffolk Team. Initially I am planning to use the significant Suffolk resources I own to add or improve profiles and properly source all the relatives I know of. In addition I am working on the Suffolk "Unsourced Profiles" lists.

Research Notes

My Brick Walls

  • Isabel Robson (c1695-1762) - parish registers lost.
  • Frances Wood (c1760-1820) - just can't find her in available indexes and online image sets.
  • Hyam Isaacs (1771-1849) - I don't have the Jewish genealogy skills to find anything).
  • Daniel Hummerston (c1802-1857) - just can't find him in available indexes or online image sets.
  • John Sampson & Emblan Oppe - married in Portsea HAM in 1762 but I can't find anything earlier for either of them. (Note there is an Emblan Opie baptised in St Agnes c 1730, but she married in Redruth.)
  • William Paine (c1804-1846) - too many Paines in West London, including another William Paine of the same age.
  • George Farey (c1753-1795) - just can't find him.
  • John Jackman (c1750-1805) - mariner in a port town from ????

Thank you for all the work you have been doing on this branch of the Suffolk Fairweather tree!
My pleasure. I will hopefully be working slowly backwards from my 4xgreat-grandmother Jane Fairweather (Fairweather-2810). I need to finish transcribing the Debenham registers for FreeREG, but I don't think the early Fairweathers came from Debenham. I am also waiting on Suffolk Family History Society to further expand their series of excellent transcription CD/Downloads. Sue

Hi Susan,

Thank you for your commitment to the England Project and its goals in 2023! Together we are making English WikiTree profiles the best they can be!

I'd like to share our end-of-year 2023 Newsletter. You can read it here: England Project Newsletters. We hope you enjoy reading about what we have achieved in 2023!

On behalf of all the England Project Leaders, we wish you a peaceful, productive and enjoyable 2024!

Best wishes,

Elizabeth, England Project Leader

Hi Susan,

I see that you've marked the relationship of many of your ancestors to their parents 'confirmed with DNA'. There's a statement required to be entered in each child's biography explaining how you used DNA to confirm the parental relationship(s). It's all explained here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/DNA_Confirmation

There's a DNA Confirmation Citation Maker which will help you figure out which relationships can be marked 'confirmed with DNA'. The app will also create an appropriate statement for each profile: https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/clarke11007/DNAconf.php

Please add a statement for each child whose relationship to parent(s) you have marked 'confirmed with DNA'. Until you have an appropriate DNA confirmation statement, relationships should be marked 'confident' instead of 'confirmed with DNA'.

Please let me know if I can help. Thanks!

Hello Susan,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Thankyou Erin. I've decided to add my antecedents one by one which gives me a chance to double check things as I go, rather than suddenly having to check 500 possible duplicates and correct any misinformation I may have added. Slowly but surely.
