John Sanderson Close was born about 1842 in New York, United States, son of Thomas S Close (1812–1884) and Catherine Unknown (~1810–1874). In 1850, John (7) was with his parents and brother in New York City, ward 16, New York. ^[1]

In 1861, John (18) was living with his parents and brother in Ormesby, Yorkshire (North Riding). ^[2]

John (21) married Jane Annie Hopps (16) (born about 1847 in Sedgefield, Yorkshire) on 22 September 1864 in Ormesby, Middlesbrough. ^[3] Their children were:

• Elizabeth Ellen Annie Close (~1865– )
• John Ernest Close (1867– )
• Thomas William Close (1869–1925)
• Richard Henry Wood Close (~1871– )

In 1871, John (28) ^[4] was a locomotive driver, living at 55 Pennyman Street, North Ormesby with his wife and their four children.

John died in 1874 in Ormesby, Yorkshire, aged 32 and was buried in North Ormesby Cemetery on 13 December 1874.^[5]

Research Notes

• Rather a confusing family! Two cousins named Thomas Cameron Close (1834-1899) and Thomas Cameron Close (abt.1850-) need to be distinguished.
• Jane Annie Hopps married John Sanderson Close in 1864, then after he died in 1874 she married his brother Thomas Cameron Close in 1876, hence the appearance of John S's children in Thomas C's family in 1881. After Jane Annie died in 1882 Thomas married Lizzie Lockey in 1885.
