Note: Spelling varied wildly before the 20th century. Anyone searching for ancestors in this family should consider alternative spellings: Clazey, Clazie, Clazy, Clezie, Clezy, even Claisye, Claise, Clasey, Clasie, Clisy, Clizzee.
John was born in 1842 and was baptized "John Clezy" at Latheron, Caithness. He was the son of James Clezie and Catherine Greenlaw. He was shown in the 1851 & 1861 censuses at Wick, Caithness, as "John Clazy".
Sometime after 1861, he migraed to the United States. He married Mary Jane Fisk, on 2 October 1866 at Medina, Ohio, USA, shown there as "John Clasey".
1870 U.S. census at Medina, Ohio showed: CLASE, JOHN, 27, born SCOTLAND,
1880 U.S. census at Akron, Ohio showed that he was a U.S. citizen but was denied the right to vote - the reason is unclear, perhaps because he had insufficient assets. He was employed at a knife factory, he owned no real estate but the value of his personal property was $150.
So, we had Clezie... Clazy... Clezy... Clase... Clasey... all referring to the same person! Spelling was irregular, subject to change at a whim.
He died in 1917 and was buried at Akron, Ohio. His burial is shown at www.billiongraves.com but the grave photo at that website is for the wrong person!
