John "Jack" Clazie was born in 1879 at Warkworth, in Percy Township, Ontario, a son of John Clazie and Agnes Ritchie. The middle name "Paton" came from his maternal grandmother, Christine Paton. He was shown in the 1881 Canada census at Percy Township, living with his parents and siblings.

Note: The handwriting on the 1881 census was poor: www.familysearch.org has mistakenly indexed the surname as "Clorzie"! A correction was submitted to them in September, 2021. Have they made the correction?

John moved to the U.S. and was shown in the 1900 U.S. census at Leroy Township, New York, a farm labourer, born in Canada. But a 1901 directory then showed him at Detroit, Michigan, a "harnessmaker". The 1910 U.S. census showed "John Clazy" lived with a Flynn family, at Hancock, Michigan.

He married Laura Haas in 1918 at Detroit. An arrival record then showed that he arrived at Detroit in 1920, on the Grand Trunk Railway (from where?). His address was 12545 Flanders Street. He was a harnessmaker & watchman, 5'8" inches tall, with ruddy complexion, grey eyes and grey hair (at just 41?) Eldest son, John Joseph Clazie, died in 1923 at Detroit.

A 1930 directory at Royal Oak, Michigan, showed this family's home was 280 Ardmore Drive. John Clazie was employed at a "trimmer" by Briggs Manuracturing, Highland Park.

The 1940 U.S. census showed he was 60, lived in Ward 21, Detroit, was a watchman. It shows, "ethnicity: American; birth location: Canada." The census included his wife, Laura, 55; sons William, 17, and Robert, 12.

He died in 1948 at Detroit and was buried at Troy, Michigan.
