Perhaps I should "sign off" as an active member.
Or I could go on contributing when I feel up to it. I'd refrain from touching pre-1770 profiles, which seem to need more care.
I don't want to risk entering rubbish. Cheers, Alan
What do you say?
Reliable sources are required for Pre-1700 Profiles. In any case, an online tree is not a reliable source. Also, when you review the England Project Reliable Sources you will see that The Peerage is not a reliable source.
I hope you are well!
I'm sorry that you are no longer participating in the England Project's Orphan Trail, which we ask all new project members to complete. Sometimes people find that their interests change or the Orphan Trail isn't what they thought it would be. Thank you for your work on the Orphan Trail!
You are most welcome to re-apply to join the England Project when you have the time to commit to completing the Orphan Trail.
I do hope you choose to rejoin us in the future. In the meantime, please feel free to use the Orphan Trail resource pages as a guide when creating or editing English profiles. You can find links to them here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:England_Orphaned_Profiles_Team

Thank you for your comment. I take your point.
I will keep my eyes open for any information on this interesting Llangollen family. If I were young and mobile, I would think of making a trip to Denbighshire and Llangollen to ferret out sources.
My fourth cousin, Mr Home, whom I mention under "sources", is also an elderly gentleman. However, if you are personally interested in getting more information, you could perhaps consider mailing him.
I imagine the unsatisfactory pre-1700 profiles that I have created can remain, marked as I see they are as lacking sources. I will try to bear in mind your advice for the future. I will try to include the information I have discovered in the profiles of people who lived later, making use of the "research note" device where appropriate. I think present-day descendants of the Wynnes may find it interesting.
These people are all relatives of mine.
Best wishes, Alan
Thanks for writing back here, however, I only noticed it today.
If instead of making a new post, you reply to an existing post, the person to whom you are replying will get a notification.
Let me know if you have questions on that and thanks for all your contributions.

Thanks for creating pre-1700 profiles like Edward Wynne (abt.1630-), Unknown Wynne (abt.1600-), and William Wynne (abt.1630-1697).
On Wikitree, our community standard is that all pre-1700 profiles must cite reliable sources in order to be created. In the case of these profiles (and their relatives you also created), the only source you have cited is the tertiary source, "A family history circulated privately to relatives by Mr Norman Home of London, England, in August 1993." which is derivative or second-hand information such as a family tree that was handed down to you and thus not considered reliable. Now perhaps that private family history cites sources that would be reliable and could be employed, but, it being private, I have no way of knowing.
Therefore, please go back and add reliable sources to the pre-1700 profiles you created today and do not create additional pre-1700 profiles without first locating reliable sources.
The Wales Project should be able to assist you if you have difficulty finding sources.
Let me know if you have questions on any of this or need help.
Thanks.
-William
If you can please provide a guess of birth, marriage, or death location, that is very helpful, even if only down to the continent, e.g., North America or Europe. Obviously, if you can guess more precisely, e.g., England, United States, or Virginia, United States, that is always better. See more on this topic at Uncertain Locations Help.
For example, in the case of Edward Wynne (abt.1630-), the locations are all blank, but it appears he might be associated with England from the context, so maybe you can use that location?
Since we have a global tree, many people share the same name and also are born or died at about the same time, so having location information is very important to disambiguate them.
Let me know if you have any questions or need some help with this.
Thanks again.

I left a message on your profile a week ago, checking in with you and seeing which team(s) you’d like to join in the Wales Project. I’ve not yet heard back from you, and I hope you are ok. If I don’t hear from you by this time next week, I’ll assume you’ve moved on to other things and will go ahead and remove you from the project for now but you would be most welcome to rejoin at any time.
Best wishes,
Olivia :-)
I might be able to help on language problems, as I studied Welsh as a child.
I have been cooperating with Jack Day on my pre-1500 ancestors.
Cheers, Alan
Thank you so much for all your contributions to WikiTree in the last six months, and especially to the Wales Project. It’s been wonderful to have you as part of the team as we work together to increase the quality and quantity of Welsh Profiles.
You don’t seem to have selected which team(s) you would like to be on. Please have a look at the project page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Wales and let me know your choices so I can introduce you to your Team Leader(s). Do you have any questions? What can we do to support you? Do you want to continue in the Wales Project moving forwards?
Please can you also private message me your e-mail so I can add you to the Google group.
I see you’re not currently on the Discord server. You’d be very welcome to join us where we have live text and voice conversations which really helps with collaboration. Just let me know and I can send you an invitation.
I look forward to hearing back from you with all the above. Thanks once again, Olivia, Project Coordinator for Wales :-)
Please advise specific interests in you have in the Wales Project. We are looking for people willing to work on the project teams. Links to the teams and their descriptions are on the Wales Project page.
Contact any of the Project Coordinators for more information on the project and the teams.
We look forward to working with you.
Stuart Awbrey PIT Project Coordinator
It's that time of the year again: check-in time! As England Project Leaders, we like to check in with you every six months or so to see how things are progressing. Back in May, we didn't ask for a response due to the rapid emergence of Covid-19 because we understood that people's lives were changing rapidly. While we are still living in a Covid world, we do need to hear back from you this time around.
First of all, how are you doing? Are you enjoying the orphan trail? Is there anything else we can help you with?
Secondly, we're looking for some feedback on the Google Group and our Discord server. Do you use either or both of these? If you don't use either, why not? Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve participation and collaboration, either generally or for you personally?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Joan, Amy & Lizzie.
I haven't interested myself in the Google Group or the Discord server. What really interests me is finding out about my ancestors and working on their profiles. Can the Google group and the Discord server help here?
I look forward to your comments.Cheers Ron Chisho.m
The first of the Chisholm ancestors that I can get back to lived in Turriff, Aberdeenshire. Cheers, Alan
of different nationalities, including Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, etc. The Chilean advisor was the daughter of an ex British Ambassador to Santiago [an author, oxford graduate and linguist] and sister in law to a native born Chilean (please forgive the otiose tautologous redundancy but it is important to keep folk thinking) told us we had it right. Inevitably there are confusions left over but we hope with your guidance to resolve discrepancies (eg as to time and place) with a cooperative series of compromises that everyone can live with.
The information given in the guidelines is very complete and very useful.
However, I hope some changes can be made to improve the guidelines. Perhaps two things would be important as regards the question of married women:
To remove or revise the statement that married women, "strictly speaking", add the husband's first surname, with "de", to their names. As it stands, this statement is misleading and in many cases untrue.
To remove or revise the "suggesion" that profiles should add the husband's name to a married woman´s surname without "de". In the example I gave, this leads to creating an imaginary new double surname "Pérez Rodríguez". As has been pointed out, this is an "aberration".
Please explain when Ithe suggestion is a helpful and b an aberration
edited by William (Arbuthnot) Arbuthnot of Kittybrewster 2nd Bt
What would you say to the following suggestion for the "Current last name" section?
Replace the beginning, from "Strictly ...", by:
Traditionally, a married woman adds the husband´s first surname to her own surnames after the word "de" (of).
For example:
- Rosa Argentina Flores ... de Varey
Practices are now changing. In Spain and Chile, women continue to use their maiden names after marriage, and there is a tendency in this direction in some other countries.
Where the married woman takes her husband's name, she may in practice, using the above example, call herself one of the following:
Rosa Flores de Varey
Rosa de Varey
Rosa Argentina Varey (e.g. on her British passport)
In some countries, e.g. Colombia), some women continue to use the maiden name AFTER the married name:
Rosa de Flores Varey
and in others (e.g. USA or UK) they may "anglicise" their name for daily use
Rosa Varey
Explanation: This will perhaps make the actual situation clearer and take into account the comment made by SJ Baty on June 30, 2018, and other comments below.
Alan Chisholm
I have a second suggestion for the current last name:
Replace the suggestion for the "Current Last Name" box by:
On WikiTree, it is suggested that, in cases where it is known or can be assumed that a woman added her husband's surname to her own upon marriage, the husband's surname preceded by "de" be inserted in the "Current Last Name" box.
This then results in the Profile heading (public view) of
- Rosa (Flores Lyra) de Varey
Explanation: This will bring the suggestion in line with normal practice in most Spanish-speaking countries in which women do not continue to use only their maiden name, as explained in the various comments on the "Spanish naming conventions" profile.

Thank you for all your help last year. Perhaps you can help me again. My work on my pre-1500 ancestors has come to a halt because I haven't been able to get any reply from Jack Day to my messages for months. Perhaps he's unwell. I have also got no relply to my requests for help directed to Olivia (Anon (Macleod) Anon) of the Wales Project. Can you perhaps help me to get in contact with someone so I can continue work? Thanks a million. Alan

I hope you are doing well.
I notice that you have created a few profiles with birth dates of about 1500 and some early pre-1700 with the source geni.com.
May I direct you to a few helpful resources?
Reliable sources will be birth, marriage, death, and census records. Also, WikiTree has a Source Library you may find helpful.
Also, from the profile, if you click the RootsSearch link that is found under the "Research" section on the right-hand side, it will pre-load the information from the profile into a search engine that takes you to a wide variety of genealogy sites.
Profiles of person pre-1500 will need someone with that badge to edit them. If you find that you are unable to edit the few profiles you created with a birth date of about 1500, you will need to request assistance to do so. I do recommend that if you will be working on profiles in these areas that you join a Project (Spain and Latin America).
Please let me know if you need further assistance.
See you in the branches,
Azure Rae

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.
Many thanks for your message. I am much enjoying working with WikiTree. I have some interesting information on ancestors and have applied to join the Project Wales. At the moment I am trapped in Guatemala by the Covid epidemic and am taking the opportunity to explore the history of Guatemalan and Chilean families to which I am related by marriage. If you are interested, look at Lissberg-1, Curiqueo-1 and Blumenthal-255.
Although British, I´m not to my knowledge, related to Winston Churchill!
Best wishes, Alan Chisholm
Me again. I´m asking another question, mainly out of curiosity.
I find one can get to WikiTree profiles via a Google search. Does the technology somehow prevent the general public from making changes, perhaps unjustified, in the profiles, thus possibly undoing our work?
Greetings, Alan
In order to make changes, someone has to become at least a Family Member. Then, someone can only make changes on 'Open' profiles.
Let me know if you have any other questions, I'm happy to help!

Sorry, I didn't see this message. If you want to send me a message, you can do so from my profile page if you'd like. Comments on your profile don't get seen unless someone is on your page.
In the upper right-hand corner of any page on WikiTree is a link for Help Index under the Help menu. This is a great resource and has a search function. Merging help can be found there.

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ. Sources are very important here on Wikitree, especially on Pre-1700 profiles. It is how we show where we got the info and helps others find it too. Find out more about Pre-1700 Profiles sourcing here and citation info here.
Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.
If you have any questions, click reply below this message and I will get back to you.

Not sure if you got a response to this question. You can edit your mother's last name at birth to correct this info. Go to her profile, click the edit tab and then next to "Last Name at Birth" click edit.
In order to get a speedier reply, be sure to use the reply link below the comment. That way the person will be notified that you have posted a reply.
If you have any questions, please ask. I am happy to help!

I am pleased to welcome you as a member of the WikiTree family. Your contributions will go a long way to joining the world’s trees together.
I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.
Please add as much information as you can, with sources, as it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.
Have fun collaborating on your ancestors
Wendy ~ WikiTree Greeter
P.S. If links do not work in an email from WikiTree, try them from the comment section on your profile page.
If you want to communicate with cousins or others about genealogy (whether or not you want to add profiles on our single family tree), you can upgrade at no cost to the Family Member level at any time by adding your genealogy communication preferences.

I accidentally created two profiles for Rev. Alexander Chisholm, who was my father's grandfather and my mother's great-grandfather. They are Chisholm-2069 and Chisholm-2073. How do I merge the profiles?
Many thanks for all your help.
From Chisholm-2073, at the bottom of his profile, there is a link to initiate a merge. Click on that and then put in Chisholm-2069 as the profile to merge into.
Here is more information on merging: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Merging#Merges

I have also adopted an "orphaned" profile which I discovered by googling: for Cuhelyn ap Rhun, a thirteenth-century ancestor of mine. I will work on it if I am accepted by the Wales project. I have some information on this chap.
Another question: I posted a comment on my father´s profile 2 days ago, saying I didn´t know how I could enter the name of his first wife. I later solved the problem by creating profiles for my half-brother and his mother, thereby automatically amending my father's profile. However, for information: is there an established procedure for entering additional spouses in a profile? Cheers, Alan
Congratulations on Pre-1700 certification and signing up for the Wales Project! In order to edit profiles from the thirteenth century, you would need to be Pre-1500 certified. Until that happens, you can research the person and then work with a member of the Wales Project team who has the certification to get the profile updated with any new sources.
If you can see an 'edit' tab on the profile, click on that. Then on the right-hand side, there will be a section for Spouses and you can click the link to 'add spouse'.
Let me know if you have other questions, happy to help.
