Biography

George Chapin was born in Idaho.

George Elliott Chapin was born in Boise, Ada, Idaho, United States on 26 Oct 1891 to Charles Dickens Chapin and Jessie Vern (Harroun) Chapin. [1][2] Within the year, he and his parents move to Idaho Falls, Bingham (later Bonneville County), Idaho, United States where his paternal grandparents live. [3][4]

He was an only child until just before his thirteenth birthday when he was joined by a little sister. [5] He attends elementary school[6] and then Central High[7] in Idaho Falls and is a member of the Baptist Church’s Sunday School Program, [8] although his family are Episcopalians. By the time he is 19, George works for his father, the Idaho Falls City Engineer, as a “rod man” for surveying. [9] He also kept bees. [10]

His father and his grandfather, who amongst other endeavors was a politician and newspaperman, were two of the key proponents for implementing a modern sewer system in Idaho Falls and even before George was twenty-one, he made and kept financial commitments to the city in support of this goal. [11][12]

Sadly, his father passed away unexpectedly in 1912 and his grandfather in 1916. He helped support his mother[13][14] until she remarried in 1915 and then supported and cared for his widowed grandmother. [15]

During this time, perhaps following examples set by his father and grandfather, he served as Deputy City Engineer[16] and later ran for office and received the nomination for City Surveyor.[17] He was not yet 25 years old.

His mother and her new husband had moved to Hailey in Blaine County, Idaho and it was there that he met Audrey Katherine Cummings. They were married at his mother’s house in Hailey by the Methodist Episcopal minister on the morning of 7 Aug 1918. [18][19] That afternoon he and a group of other Class 1 draftees left for Camp Fremont. [20][21] Due to Germany’s surrender in November of that year, he never made it past Camp Merritt and was given an honorable discharge on 28 Jan 1919 as an IDAHO PVT 1 CL. U.S. ARMY. [22] (His draft registration card dated 5 Jun 1917 indicated that he had previously served in the military for 1 year.) [23]

Upon his return, he changed career paths and became a postal clerk in the Railway Mail Service on the Oregon Short Line and was based out of Pocatello, Bannock, Idaho. [24][25] He lived in Pocatello[26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35] and stayed with the Railway Mail Service for the remainder of his life. [36][37] In 1923, when the Pocatello employees of the Railway Mail Service organized and formed a new branch of the thirteenth division, Railway Mail Association, George served as secretary and financial secretary of the branch. [38]

He and Audrey had a boy[39] and a girl[40] in 1920 and 1923 respectively[36] and no other children for thirteen years. Then in 1936, they had a son who succumbed to bronchial pneumonia before he was three weeks old[41] and in January of 1938, when George was 47 and his wife was 42, their final child and youngest son was born.[37][42] . In 1942, when George registered for the WWII draft, he was described as white, 5'9-1/2", 175lbs, with brown eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion and glasses. [43] He was 50 years old and not drafted, but less than two years later, George passed away from a coronary embolism. [44] It happened on 19 Jan 1944, [45] the evening before his youngest son’s sixth birthday. George was buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Pocatello, Bannock, Idaho. [46] His grave has a flat marble marker provided by the war department. [22]
