Intro

Profiles listed here under this Personal Category are believed to contain some clue as to my John Davidson (abt.1817-1900) brickwall.

The question is: Who are John's parents?

John was born about 1817 in Chirnside, Berwickshire. His 1900 death certificate shows his mother was an Ann Collins, who has also proven elusive.

The clues in general come from DNA matches that look promising, and as such, we would love to hear from any descendant or relative of those listed families connected below who have DNA tested to see if any further clues may be gleaned as to where the connection is.

Feel free to extend the families up / down / sideways of any people listed here. The more connections created, the more chance of finding the links, documentation, DNA hints.

Nov 2022 update: One down, one to go! Check out how Ann Collins has stopped hiding.

DNA

yDNA

A tested direct paternal line descendant of John is haplogroup I-M253. Which can be refined should we manage to find a BigY test candidate.

Documented yDNA family already connected to John here can be found by following these two links - alternate views of the same info.

yDNA connected people here on WikiTree, thanks to the single yDNA test we have.

Even better, if you are a direct male line descendant of any of the Davidson lines linked under Person profiles below and not already yDNA tested I, Lorna, have a sponsored y37 kit available with your name on it for you. You may hold the clue we are looking for!

atDNA

There aren't many quick results to be had from autosomal DNA given these brickwalls are at my 3*great grandparent level, so 4th cousins at least to the unknown cousins.

My DNAPainter chromosome mappings by grandparent need more work. I currently (Mar 2024) can only definitively assign about 13% of my matches to being from Agnes Manson Davidson, John's granddaughter, and only about 7% to her father Adam Davidson, son of John. On average there should be about 25% for Agnes and 12.5% for Adam. The families on this line of my ancestry is not prolific, sparsely tested, with no 1st cousins to work with, and no known 2nd cousins either (this changed recently with some unexpected results however) and only a handful of tested 3rd cousins.

A few connection patterns are however beginning to emerge.

Looking at the gaps in my DNAPainter by grandparent analysis and working on the larger matches in these gaps has had some results.

The Colvine family of Berwickshire below was shaping up to be "of interest", and has indeed led to a successful result for John's mother's ancestry.

On the assumption from John's surname that Ann Collins / Collan / Colvin "met" a Davidson around 1817, the Davidson families that might be "of interest" are gradually being added to WikiTree and linked to below, any of whom I'd love to hear from DNA tested descendants of to explore matches - yDNA or autosomal.

If anyone can extend the family up / down or sideways here on WikiTree, patterns may well emerge.

Adding yet more science to the problem

Most of our kits are on GEDmatch, MyHeritage and FamilyTreeDNA, with only a few at Ancestry and even fewer on 23andme.

For comparisons across companies, especially if you only tested at Ancestry which does not provide the same level of detail for checking where the DNA shared actually comes from on your respective ancestries, please consider uploading your testing company DNA file to the sites offering free uploads (MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA, GEDmatch,).

You can read how here: https://dna-explained.com/2019/11/04/dna-file-upload-download-and-transfer-instructions-to-and-from-dna-testing-companies/

FTDNA

I also run a private atDNA project on FamilyTreeDNA, so if you transfer into FTNDA (quick to do via their upload your DNA link), let me know and I'll send instructions on how to join FFLornaHen there too.

We never know where the key person to this mystery will pop up, so I try to cover all bases!

Families of interest

The linked profiles below under Person profiles are those here on WikITree that somehow hold clues to the above mystery.

If you can extend the Davidson families connected below as Pesonal Profiles, please do so here on WikiTree. Somehow, their descendants are already an autosomal DNA match, or they are connected to a family that is.

From a direct male line perspective we are particularly interested in any potential Davidson connections from likely families on the Scottish Borders.
