Biography

Genealogically Defined
This profile is part of the St Michael's Mount, Cornwall One Place Study.

Philip was the only son of mariner Philip Calf and his wife, Rebecca Ford. He was born on St Michael's Mount, Cornwall, and baptised at Marazion on 3rd April 1788.[1] Philip was three years old when his father died, and five when his mother married John Trannack. In addition to his three sisters, he grew up with six half-siblings.

Philip Calf was a mariner.

With a father, stepfather and extended family members as mariners, it was inevitable that Philip would also spend his life on the seas. He was a mariner when he married Mary Foot at Fowey in 1812, and it appears the couple remained there for a time, as their first child, Philip, was born there the following year.[2]

By July 1815 Philip had returned home with his family, and the next three children were born on St Michael's Mount.

Philip served in HM Coastguard (Britain) from 1822 to 1843.

Around 1822 or 1823, Philip took his family to Ireland for at least nine years and his last five children were born at Greystones in County Wicklow. Greystones is a suburb of Waterford, and may have been the Registration District title as there was no CG Station at Waterford. There was a Station at Woodstowne, 8 miles to seaward of Waterford on the west bank of the River Suir. The earliest record of Philip working as a coastguard is with the baptism of his son Charles in 1830, but it possibly is the reason why he went to Ireland, as the Coastguard was first formed in 1822.[3][4]

Philip and Mary had a total of nine children:

Some time between 1832 and 1841, Philip and family relocated to Porthallow Cornwall, where he was to live untill he retired as a coastguard, possiblky at age 55, as recorded in the CG Service General Memoranda of 1875. There was no coastguard station at Porthallow, but a small coastguard station was 1.5 miles to the south at Porthoustock.
