Emma Burchell was born on 13 Febuary 1844 in Kate's Hill, Dudley, Worcestershire, England to parents Joseph Burchell and Mary Llewellyn.[1]

Emma left Liverpool, England with her mother and brother to immigrate to the United States on the Colonist. They arrived in New York on 19 October 1848. Emma was 4-years-old.[2]


6-year-old Emma lived with her step-father, mother, older brother, and two Scottish boarders in Bloom Township, Columbia, Pennsylvania at the 1850 Census:[3]

On 16 May 1853, 9-year-old Emma and her family move to Utah with the Moses Clawson Company, 3rd Company headed by Captain Henry Sudweeks. They travel with one wagon and four oxen. They arrived in Deseret, Utah on 20 September 1853:[4]

Emma married John Logan Flack on 7 June 1860 in Bates Creek, Utah. She was 16-years-old.

16-year-old Emma lives with her husband in West Jordan, Utah at the 1860 Census. John works as a farm laborer and their estimated value of their estate is around $400 which is approximately $14,304 today:[5]

On 29 January 1862, Emma and John welcome their secondborn child, Mary Emma Flack. Mary would eventually die in 1888 after giving birth to twins.

On 21 August 1866, Emma and John welcome their third child, William Aytchman Flack.

On 2 May 1869, Emma and John welcome their fourth child, John Charles Flack.


26-year-old Emma lives with her husband and three children in Fairfield, Utah at the 1870 Census. John works as a laborer to support the family. Their estimated real estate value is $100 and the value of personal belongings is $200. Today that would be $2,265 and $4,531 respectively:[6]

On 23 January 1873, Emma and John welcome their fifth child, Minnie Alice Flack.

On 27 June 1877, Emma and John welcome their sixth child, George Madison Flack.


36-year-old Emma lives with her husband and five children in Fairfield, Utah at the 1880 Census. Emma's brother and mother live together next door - although it looks like Mary may have been divorced/widowed since she has her original marriage name:[7]

Emma passed away on 19 May 1929 in Fairfield, Utah at the age of 65. According to her Death Certificate, Emma's death was due to infermities connected to old age. Emma was buried on 22 May 1929 in Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield, Utah.[11][12]

Death Certificate: Emma's death certificate indicates that her parents are Joseph Burchell and Mary Llewellyn(sp?). Information was found on FamilySearch and Ancestry. Profiles will be added to connect to the Tree.
James Franklin Flack: Emma and John's firstborn son, James Franklin Flack, is mentioned several times in a history of the Flack's. However, a source regarding his existence has not been found.
Birth Place: Some records indicate Emma was born in Dudley, England, while others say Worcestershire.
