Brisbane Telegraph (Qld. : 1948 - 1954), Sat 12 Jun 1954, Page 3 Icy swim by truck men DALBY: A transport truck driver and his assistant had an icy swim when they escaped from the submerged cabin of a diesel truck in Myall Creek. One man escaped from the cabin, came to the surface, but not seeing his mate, dived for him. Meantime the other man had come to the surface, and missing his mate, also went under again. Eventually both met on the surface. They are in the Dalby Hospital suffering from shock and immersion. Their truck plunged from Drayton Street bridge about 6 a.m. today. Sidney Stevens, 23. single, of the Gladstone Hotel, Toowoomba, injury to the left leg; and William John Buchanan. 21, single, of 168 Hume Street, Toowoomba. The truck, which was owned by Western Transport, was loaded with general goods for the Chinchilla district. It is believed that when it was half way across the bridge the steering failed. The truck swerved to the right and ran through a rail then it crashed through a footbridge, and ended up with the cabin submerged in about 8 feet of icy cold water. Police later cut through a section of the bridge to allow the truck to fall in to the creek so as to take the weight from the structure.

Each dived in search of the other— then met on the surface. The truck, fully laden, had plunged from a bridge into Myall Creek, near Dalby. The driver, Kenneth Sidney Stevens. 23, and his assistant, William John Buchanan, 21, both of Toowoomba, suffered shock and were taken to hospital.
