Tahana Marriage Taken from "Petticoat Pioneers", book 2 by Miriam MacGregor From a letter written by Grace Hirst, started 2 October, 1854. "There is a great deal of talk about a girl in town who is going to marry William Tahana, a very handsome young Maori - indeed the nicest looking man of any sort we have seen here. He lives at the Hua. Her name is Mary Bishop, she does not bear a very good character. She fell in love with and popped the question to the young man. If this match comes off it will be the first instance here of a white woman marrying a Maori, although there have been several the other way."
