Benjamin was born 30 Aug 1807. He was the son of John Bean and Christina Zeitter. He passed away 20 Mar 1887.
Benjamin B. Been, Sr. is the son of John Bean and Catherine Zeiderin Bean. In 1829, Benjamin married Catherine Wharton Bean.
Benjamin first came to Indiana in 1842, by horseback, the saddle and bridle being given to him by his brother-in-law, Alexander Scott. (His sister Christina's husband.) He came by what was known in later years as The Mohawk Country, which lay a few miles east of the village of Burrows Station, on the Wabash Rail Road, which was built in 1856.
This trail he took led to the headwaters of what is known as Little Rock Creek. Where the Creek joins the Wabash River, there is a large rock, known as Ford Rock. There were no bridges to cross the river, and early settlers were told that if the rock could be seen, it was safe to ford the river, and not otherwise.
Benjamin purchased land at the government Land Office in Crawfordsville, Indiana, which was about sixty miles away. After gaining title to the land, at a dollar and twenty-five cents per acre, he had only seventy-five cents left in cash for his return trip to Ohio.
Early in the year of 1843, Benjamin brought his family by Ox Wagon, one yoke of oxen and one horse, and other articles which would be most useful to them in their settlement in Caroll County. Benjamin and his sons cleared timber, and built roads. Some of the sons used the name Bean and some used the name Been, and so the names of the children are shown as Bean-Been.
