Harold Battes is an Anzac who served in World War One.

Biography

Harold was born in 1888. He was the son of Charles Battes and Emma Greathead.

When the 1st World War broke out he was single, living in Makirikiri, New Zealand. He enlisted and served as a Trooper with the Wellington Mounted Rifles, Main Body. His next of kin was recorded as C.A. Battes (father), Loan and Mercantile, Waimate, New Zealand. Service No: 11/496

EMBARKATION DETAILS WW1 16 October 1914 from Wellington, New Zealand. HMNZT 6 or HMNZT 10. Vessel was Orari or Arawa. disembarked Alexandria, 3 December 1914.

He Embarked from Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, on 9 May 1915. He was reported wounded at Anzac Cove on 27 August 1915. A Board of Enquiry held at Anzac on 14 December 1915 concluded he had been 'Killed in Action on 27 August 1915'.

His body was probably never recovered, and he was buried where he fell.

Harold's name is on the Hill 60 (New Zealand) Memorial at Gallipoli[1].

He is also memorialised on his parents' headstone at Archer Street Cemetery in Masterton, New Zealand.
