Charles was born in 1854. His birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1854[1]. He was probably the son of Henry Battes and Rosa Brown Allin who were married on 22 October 1843 at Saint Dunstan and All Saints Church, Stepney, London, England[2].
Charles emigrated from England to New Zealand in about 1866.
He married Emma Jane Greathead on 10 September 1881 in The Manse, Masterton, North Island, New Zealand, by the Rev James McKee.
They had at least four children.
His wife died in 1892. Some time after her death he moved south to Christchurch. He was an Auctioneer.
Tragically his son Harold was killed in action at Gallipoli, Turkey on 27 August 1915.
Charles passed away in 1919 aged 65 and was buried on 17 July 1919 at Bromley Cemetery, Bromley, Christchurch City, Canterbury, New Zealand. PLOT: 47 - BLOCK 37[3].
