Biography

Charles Barriball was an early settler and pioneer of New Zealand. He had been born in Cornwall in 1811, and emigrated to New Zealand after his marriage to Ann Martyn in 1836. They married on 31 March 1836 in Ann's birthplace, in North Tamerton, Cornwall.

The 1841 Census in England found him in Cornwall with his wife and parents and siblings, and Charles described as having been born in Cornwall around 1811 and aged 30. He was an agricultural labourer. His parents were in their 60's at that time.

According to the Barriball family website, the name Barriball is most likely to have come from the Cornish language. The words 'bar an bal' mean 'top of the mine' or 'minehead', so it is possible that the original bearer of the surname Barriball lived a short distance form a mine.

Charles' brother Henry, and Henry's wife Mary and two small children, William and Richard, had emigrated to the New Plymouth settlements in New Zealand on the clipper 'Timandra', arriving on February 23rd, 1842. Charles decided to follow suit and also emigrate to New Zealand.
New Zealand
Charles Barriball lived in Waiuku, Auckland, New Zealand.

The couple with their three young children, John, Samuel and Sophia, departed from Plymouth on 'The Duke of Westminster' on December 4th, 1842. They arrived in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1843, after a journey of 128 days. Instead of travelling on to New Plymouth where his brother and family had settled, Charles elected to remain in Auckland, farming land in Mt Eden owned by a Methodist Minister, the Rev. Lawry,

Charles became the owner of 145 acres, 1 rood, 20 perches in Waiuku by Crown Grant in 1856. He named the property Eden Grove. Eight months later, he took up a further grant of 442 acreas of land in the Parish of Waiuku East. This area was originally called Waitangi and was later renamed Pukeoware. This property was known as Eden Hill. There is a road where the farm was that is named after Charles Barriball. While Charles was engaged in clearing his new land, his eldest son remained in Mt Eden (the area sometimes described as Epsom or Mt Eden), farming there. Charles sold off or gifted land to family members as they grew older and independent, but remained farming in Waiuku until his death.

Charles Barriball died in 1880 [1] from heart disease and is buried in Waiuku Cemetery.
