Robert was born in 1893 in Hartley, Manitoba. He was the son of Robert Barclay and Anne Coulter who were farmers. His mother died in 1902. His father married Anne Hepburn MacKenzie. His father took out a homestead near Jansen, Saskatchewan in 1906. He took Robert (Bobby) and his older brother, Jim, as well, to Jansen. In 1910, Robert was kicked in the head by a horse. He died shortly afterward. Bobby was buried in Jansen Cemetery.
