Ralph was born on 1 March 1804 at Grosvenor Street, London, England. He was the son of Brig.-Gen. Robert Anstruther and Lucy Charlotte Hamilton. He was baptised on 13 May 1804 at Carnbee, Fife, Scotland.
On the passing of his grandfather on 2 August 1818 he succeeded to the title of 4th Baronet Anstruther, of Wrae, co. Linlithgow established 1694 in the Scottish Baronetage of Nova Scotia.
He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1822 with a Master of Arts (M.A.) He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Grenadier Guards.
He married Mary Jane Torrens, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Sir Henry Torrens and Sarah Patton, on 2 September 1831. They had children:
He held the office of Lord Rector of the University of St. Andrew's in 1859.
Sir Ralph was one of the chief landholders in Watten, in Caithness, in the mid-1840s.[1]
He passed away on 18 October 1863 at age 59 at Balcaskie, Fife, Scotland.
