Note N60Better known as "London Bob", Robert was a publican in London. Agnes Craig, in her letter to Jean Kennedy Campden (nee Craig), remembers her mother Margaret Craig (nee Anderson) and her sister Elizabeth going to London to visit London Bob.
Bob's birthdate, place and parents names are confirmed on Scots Origins (GRO) database.
The 1861 census finds Robert living and working with his father, siblings and his step-family at Sandhills Farm, Coylton, Beith. Robert is listed as aged 28, occupation "Farmers son", born in Stewarton, Ayrshire. Also listed are father James, aged 53, occupation "farmer of 223 acres, employing 2 men, 2 labourors, and 3 women", born in Dunlop, Ayrshire; stepmother Jane (listed as Jean), "farmers wife", aged 37, born in Stewarton, Ayrshire; sister Janet, aged 25, occupation "farmers daughter", born in Stewarton; sister Mary, aged 19, occupation "farmers daughter", born in Dalry; brother Thomas, aged 15, occupation "farmers son", born in Dalry; stepsister Marion, aged 8, scholar, born in Dalry; stepsister Elizabeth, aged 3, born in Dalry; and stepsister Jane Miller Anderson, aged 5 months, born at Coylton. Also present on the census are Hugh Gilmour, servant and Ploughman, aged 21, born in Ireland; Margaret Wright, domestic servant, aged 17, born in Fenwick, Ayrshire; and James Pringle, servant and cattle attendant, aged 15, born in Dalry, Ayrshire. Sandhills was a large house - 7 rooms had windows.
Robert was a witness at brother Thomas' wedding in January 1871.
