Welcome to the Weekend Chat, my dear ones! And greetings from Cathey’s Creek where we’ve had very little rain this past week and temps creeping up into the low 7-0sF.  I am posting this Chat much earlier than usual as I will be delivering the family I’ve been helping to a court hearing in a neighboring town. I have no idea how long this is going to take.

On the Home Front: It’s been a busy week with lots of time spent in the car. I am learning the value of saying, “no,” which relieves some of the stress I have been under. I just cannot be there every single day. My wife is beginning to think she’s lost me. I took her on a date Wednesday night to see a movie, The Long Game, which is showing now at our local theater. Not a great movie, but one still worth seeing.

I’m not going to go into all the details for privacy concerns, but the needs in that family are greater than I can possibly meet, financially or time wise. But, for the sake of my mentee, I do what I can, including picking him up tonight from work so he can get a shower here to look presentable in case he is called as a witness.

Physical therapy continues apace. I don’t know how much longer I will be there, but they are really pushing me lately which is a good thing. I am making great progress.

On the Genealogy Front: I did do a little work on that Underwood-McKee family, and I mean a little. Most of the rest of my time online with WikiTree has been greeting (as usual, but with help from my fellow Greeters when I could not be there for my shift). I have had, recently, a lot more requests for help from new members.

The therapist who I was working with on Wednesday asked me what I do with my time, and of course I mentioned genealogy. He asked for a couple of stories.

One was where one of my ancestors and one of my wife’s were one above the other on a ship list coming for what is now Germany. Small world that it is, about 250 years after they arrived, my wife and I married.

The other story was about my ancestor William Lawing, twice caught stealing watches in London in the 1740s. He was convicted on the second charge and at the age of 14, the youngest age at which a convict could be transported, was sentence to a little vacation to the Colony of Virginia. He ended up marrying a daughter of the ancestor who was on the ship list I mentioned above. Yeah, it’s a small world.

My wife has a better story about a rogue of a cousin from Kentucky. Maybe I’ll remember to share it with you some day. I think you’ll get as much of a kick out of that one as we do in the telling.

I broke 200,000 total contributions during the last thon.

For an anniversary this week, I offer my parents wedding on 28 April 1951.

Be blessed, dear ones, every one of you.

Enjoy the Chat!

Hi Pip, I am glad to hear that the therapy continues well, and enjoyed the story about your watch-stealing ancestor landing in Virginia. There are no coincidences. I applaud you for all that you are doing for the family of your mentee. I do wish there was a social services group/program as I think you and Mrs. Pip do need respite. It is good to know that you and she got out for a while for a 'movie date.'
A rogue of a cousin from Kentucky, huh? Well, ain't that just crazier than a toothless alligator at a dental convention. Yes. You must tell this story. The people demand it now that it's out there in the universe.

Stealing watches at 14? Well, good luck trying to do that now!! (No one wears watches anymore.)

Oh, you got some good stories that I could riff on. Thanks for hosting, Pip! =D

@ Carol: I wonder if he was on time for his arraignment. ;)
Other than my 2 x GU, who ran away to sea and then later in life became a Methodist minister in northern Ontario, I can't think of anyone who was unusual. They were all pillars of the community and mostly very proper.
200,000? Wow I am impressed Congrats Pip. I told me therapist about Wikitree too, she is interested but she is young yet and likes to spend time at home with her newborn baby. Some of my older friends are interested but they just don't get it or why it excites me. Good story about your ancestor by the way. Have a great week!
Hi Pip Congratualtions on the 200,000 contributions that's massively well done. I'd love to hear about the '''rogue cousin''' too. I don't have any cool stories like you have.

Hello WikiTree Cousins!

Wow, this week felt like it flew by! The weather here has been decent.

We had no major appointments this week. I got my first haircut since my scalp surgery. My hair has not yet started to regrow in that area so we are just trying to get the surrounding hair to sort of halfway cover my bald spot which is a challenge. Hopefully, once they recover from the trauma, the follicles will start producing hair again. If not, wigs may be in my future. Hair is regrowing from where I had the first surgery in November, so I have hope.

I work on WikiTree everyday, but I really don't have a major focus like many of you do. I wanted to get to a 5000 C7 this year and I'm at 4883 today, so I think it's definitely a goal I will achieve.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
by Nelda Spires G2G6 Pilot (569k points)
Hi Nelda (20th Cousin of mine)

Your hair will grow back slowly just give it time, Wigs are a good options so are hats, scarfs too. You have a beautiful heart and that is what matters.

By the way are you related to the Peter Gilchrist who writes all the Orthodox books?

Have a great weekend.
Hi Chris! Thanks for the reassurance. I bought a couple of hats to keep with me. Don't want the sun to get to my surgical sites. Not related to Peter Gilchrist that I know of. I've never heard of him before. Will have to check him out.
Wow Nelda, another person aiming for 5000. I'm sure you'll make it. Every little bit helps
A cousin had surgery and then chemo when her hair fell out. It was during lockdown so she was sent some wigs to try . We used Zoom so we could all see and comment on which we thought was most flattering and surprise surprise the 5 of us all chose the same cute pixie cut one which she purchased and wore for a couple of months until her hair began to regrow

Wigs can be very attractive and a godsend when experiencing hairloss

Late night post...from Rochester, Minnesota USA

51°F (11°C) with rain. The farmers need it.

I'll post more later but I'll be brief.

The family is growing!! Nieces and nephews are connecting with me on Facebook and cousins on other social media platforms. I'm not only an aunt but also a grandaunt. I feel old. surprise

I'm desperately drinking cold drinks due to hot flashes. Water is beneficial.

Work is uneventful. It's busier and more crazier. I love what I do and it keeps me out of trouble! It's not easy convincing a resident with cognitive issues that a tub bath is a good idea.

The facility that I work for hosted a senior prom for the residents! It was interesting to help a resident put on a prom dress. I had assistance from another aide with that.

More to come later... I'm going back to bed.

by Eileen Robinson G2G6 Pilot (205k points)
Hi Elleen, my 28th Cousin once removed. What a wonderful idea A Senior prom for your residence, I will have to suggest it to my friend who works in a nursing home. She is always looking for ideas.

Have a great weekend

Good morning from Germany,

where the weather was cold for the last two weeks, but now we get again the African heat. Meteorologists say we will have more than 25C again at the start of next week.

Personally, my dad would have his birthday today. Honestly, I can't imagine what he would be like at his age now. I know what he was like when he died, but that is long ago.

We went to IKEA this week. Mum wanted to buy some boxes where she can put some stuff that is above our checkroom and tends to fall down. When she decided which boxes to buy, they weren't available in the color we wanted. "They are delivered tomorrow." Tomorrow we can't come, so the day after. We want to go, but when we meet our friend at the bus stop she says that the bus drivers are striking. Oh well, we somehow came to the central bus station, but there was standing: "There are no buses today." So, we'll go there again probably next week.

Genealogically, I continued with my project. And suddenly I found a sentence in a Wikipedia-entry: "His daughter is the greatgrandmother of Otto Lilienthal." Alright, I can pull him more into the center of the Tree that way. I had to look a bit for the correct connection, but found it eventually. He was before at 39° from me and is now at 23°. It's always nice to find something like that.

When I worked a bit in the categorization for the Notables project, I found an article about the ancestry of Daniel Craig. I then went to the profile of one of his x-time ggfather who was named in the article. Turns out, even Daniel's father has an (unlisted) profile. One TL-request, and Daniel got connected.

I think that's it for today, stay safe and have a great weekend.

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Hi Jelena great connecting there with Daniel Craig.

It's great to see a hint from another source. It can sent us down another rabbit hole for the right information and then bring us closer together. It's fantastic

Well hello from a wet and windy South Cheshire ( seems to be the norm of late, though the weatherman promises better weather mid week onwards)

It was our wedding anniversary this week so one of our children took us out for a meal which was very nice. On returning home we had a look at the wedding photo album and had a laugh at the fashions then..We also said a little prayer for those who are no longer with us now.

On a more cheerful note some iris bulbs I bought in a bargain basement sale have come up and are flowering very good value for 25p!

A grandson passed Grade 1 piano and Guitar so he was very pleased with the "little something" Grandad gave him which I expect he will spend on more Lego or a computer game

The phone is ringing so will hang up here

Happy Anniversary Anon and congratulations to your grandson

Thank you. When we married my adoptive father said it wouldn't last but here we are umpteen years laterwink a bit older, no wiser and still happy together

I will pass your congratulations to "i" who is now getting ready to sing in a concert with a solo piece in a very large concert hall. He says he is looking forward to it smiley

Happy Saturday Cousins!

Balmy and rainy here in the Midwest US.  Fortunately, we have not had the severe storms. Others have suffered losses during the storms with the tornadoes, flooding, and wind.

Genealogy takes up every spare moment I happen to be blessed with and I've been wondering lately if there's such a thing as "Wiki-mania"?   lol

I find as I dive ever deeper into this place that every aspect that I love about this hobby to include:

  • researching,
  • getting the facts right,
  • reading old newspapers,
  • finding that missing record,
  • wandering old cemeteries and looking over the history,
  • making connections,
  • remembering the nearly-forgotten

that I dart to and fro from every Challenge, Project, report, help request, and personal genealogical To Do's in a mad frenzy to make a dent in it all.  Do not think I'm complaining as I'm loving every single moment of it.

I think I must come from a line of "historians" or something as my family is sprinkled with the Remember-ers, the storytellers, the lore carriers.  My dear brother was notorious starting at a young age in his early 20's of spending his early mornings on the weekends paying visits to friends, family and neighbors.  He loved to talk with people face-to-face and down cups of coffee and smoke cigarettes as he did so.  He held so many stories in his head, and heart, about the people he knew and the ones he didn't...the ones that came before him.  I wish I had written them all down through the years.  I miss you dear brother Shawn.  Next week you would have been 58...."just like me, but only for a few days".

This weekend I have a few errands and the usual chores.  But my free time I intend to work on Unsourced Kansas profiles a bit more, work on my local cemetery category to add/develop Biographies, clean-up some more of my Connect-a-thon adds, and maybe work on generation 6 of my family tree.

Enjoy the weekend and have an awesome week ahead.

Yes, Brenda. I fear that I, too, have contracted "Wiki-mania". Not even gonna look for a cure!
Hi Brenda. I'm with both you and Candyce. I don't want a cure either lol. As long as it keeps me busy and there is always something to peck my interest, then I'll keep going. It doesn't hurt that I can do it for free too (apart from having the computer equipement and an internet connection)

I know many wikitreers love animals (warning scary, not for children this)

My dog has been bitten early afternoon by a huge rodweiler. It was like slaugther. I jumped on the dog

A lot of blood I thought he was dying.

A group of people crying, a boy crying, Im shock

Hector was saved by angels I saw them

Animal docter cleaned us

Only his eye is wounded. miracle

I love wikitree

nobody s here at home to help

Bless you all
by Richard Ameling G2G6 Mach 2 (27.1k points)
Oh Richard how terrible, please keep us informed about your dog's recovery.
So sorry to hear this, Richard. Hope all will be well soon.
Glad to hear Hector will be ok. Quite some time ago I had a dog named Hector. Now when referencing something in the past, you guessed it, when Hector was a pup.
Thank you madam Ross

I hope you are oke. Hector only can walk around the monastery, than he is really tired. Some days ago I could run through for 3 hours with old Hector. I think he can recover a lot. He can not jump on the bed, so I lift him on. I put a blanket next to the bed, so he can jump of. Still he looks very happy and comes to hug me all the time when he s awake. The animal docter said I need a tetanus shot. The workers, the mother and kid were amazing. I told the lady of the dog I am not angry at her, neither the dog, and she went with us to the docter and paid the bills. What happened with Hector afterwards in the car was a miracle. I thought he broke his neck, had very deep wounds, lost his eye, my hands were red. Im shocked, confused, but can see sense in things because I need to take care of Hector.

God bless you
Thank you for your compassion madam.

Greetings my Wikitree Cousins!

This week sure flew by. Between therapy and doctor visits I don't know where time went. I almost had to take mama and the kittens to the vet but  I got out of it as mama started feeling better I fed her some new food that didn't set well with her. One kitten got sick but the other did, I think the cat food made her sick, I talked to the owner of the ca and we decided to see what happened. We decided it was the food. She suggested to feeding new food to a nursing mom again. Lesson  learned. Both babies lost a little weight and one baby is back to gaining weight again one is not so I will probably have to start giving her some extra milk. Snickers has started eating food so I am assuming she will be on solid food soon the other is not quite ready yet. The main thing is that they seem to be litter trained or at least peeing in the box.

Well it looks like spring/summer is here. It seems like the last few years we have not had much of a spring we just went from winter to summer in a few weeks.  I sent a good portion of yesterday cleaning out the front flower bed. Didn't get as far as I wanted but that is ok. Today I went to Menards and bought 10 bags of mulch later on tonight I will but some more mulch while it is on sale. 5 bags for `0 dollars is not too bad. with 11% rebate. I also found a hydrangea for 10.00 on the plant deep discount table. That is where I get most of my plants I p[lants and get them back to health and save a lot of money. Got 11%  off that too lol.

Well, this coming week our church will be celebrating its Easter. Yes I know we are a month behind everyone else. We have reason why we do but I don't want to get into it, If you want to find out more. I would suggest you go to Holy Week in the Eastern Orthodox Church - Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America - Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America (goarch.org) it will explain our Holy Week to you in detail. It is my favorite week of the year and also my busiest. I got my Pascha bread to yet and Easter eggs to color. I don't make most of the traditional food because I just don't like it. (Grandma Kerestesy would be turning over in her grave if she heard that and that double negative in that sentence)

Have a great week everyone!

Chris Wine

by Chris Wine G2G6 Mach 4 (48.3k points)
Chris Im glad the kitten is oke now.

Have nice Easter

God bless you and the kittens
Hi Chris glad the cats are doing better. I still haven't had the heart to replace mine yet. Sounds like your garden beds are going to keep you busy for a while. I love hydraneas, my grandmother had at least 6 massive big plants around her house when I was growing up. She always tipped the tea leaves on them from the teapot. I lost most of the plants I had from the cuttings from her house but for one that still persists. It doesn't get very big but I still have it.

Hello from Christchurch.

On the personal front I went to my first Rugby Union game in a long time with my daughters as my son's school got given some free tickets. (He had a trip he was on). It was good and the local team won 39-0.

On the Wikitree front I have been updating Biographies and adding sources to my early profiles in my watchlist. These profiles hadn't been touched for nearly 4 years and are now much better. The total on my watchlist is still a big number with loads I can orphan after improving the best I can.
by Darren Kellett G2G6 Pilot (439k points)
Remembering to orphan profiles added during thons is something I need to add to my to do list.
Hey Darren it's funny isn't it how going back to our earlier profiles we can always seem to find more to add

Hello from Medford Oregon. Weatherwise it has pretty much been the same as that Pip is discribing. We have had rain, cool days, and sunshine with temperature of 76 this week. Today fortunately it is very sunny outside although on the cool side. More new snow was dropped in the 3000 to 5000 elevations around us.

My flowers are coming along nicely: Yellow Iris, purple lilac, some tulips and the big snowball tree in front yard full of blooms.

Tom took me out to dinner twice this month to celebrate our 20th Wedding Anniversary which is tomorrow 29 April.  Last night a lovely bouquet of a dozen roses was delivered to our table while we sat enjoying a glass of wine to celebrate.

The week has been again a mixed bag of ups and downs. Several doctor appointments for my brother. One for my husband, and a dental for me to fix a cracked (I thought) front tooth. Ironically it was an old filling that came out so an easy fix.

We had a good chat with Tom's oldest daughter, my step-daughter who lives in Sweden. She communicates with her father every week which is greatly appreciated.  While the granddaughter was home from college we were able to chat with her as well. Sarah the daughter speaks about 5 plus languages and the granddaughter speaks now about four.  Ironically another granddaughter speaks about 5 languages now.  Tom and I envy them. I have forgotten most of the spanish I once knew as well as most of the German I knew.

I have been trying to reorganize my work for the 16 for 16 this month and still feeling I am stumbling all over the place. I have requested to take over a new One Name (Neal) which is in the works.

Have a great week everyone, with hugs and love from me. Alice
by Alice Thomsen G2G6 Pilot (236k points)
Hi Alice Happy Anniversary to you and your husband. I would like to remember the French and German I did at school too but I was so bad at them so it's probably best I don't. Your garden sounds lovely.

The 16 for 16, don't let it get to you, just do what you can one step at a time
Amanda thank you very much. Yes that is what I am trying to do is just one step at a time.

Good morning from Oro Valley/Tucson!  We're having a stretch of beautiful weather with comfortable afternoon temps and cool nights.  Spring doesn't last long in the desert though, so we feel very lucky to have a few days like this.  Everyone tries to guess when the first 100 degree day will be (in May).

My co-leader, Gisele Cormier, sent me an article about my family that is so well researched.  He covers my (famous in Acadian circles) 7th ggf [[Abbadie_de_Saint-Castin-2|Jean Vincent Abbadie de Saint-Castin (abt.1652-bef.1707)]].  This work led me to another source that had information about his gggf (my 11th ggf).  That source provided bits of information about two previously unprofiled brothers.  Now searching for more information about their birth dates in order to guess about the fathers birth era in order to tie them all together.  I'll need pre-1500 help to make the father.  Or maybe I can initiate it but won't be able to edit it later, I think.  Lots more to do for Jean Vincents children.  He had one native wife (10 children) and then a relationship with her sister (two children born in between with the children of the wife).  Both of these women are daughters of a well known chief [[Abenaki-7|Madockawando Abenaki (abt.1630-abt.1698)]] who is my 8th ggf.  I am able to add some sources for him that Jilliane approved (very high praise to get approval from her as she is so careful about native information).  That is the most exciting genealogy work I've had in my own tree for a while.

Off to Scottsdale for an overnight to visit Cam's brother and sister in law who come from Cali for some appts.
by Cindy Cooper G2G6 Pilot (333k points)
Hi Cindy the article you received sounds fantastic. What a treasure to be found.

Hello everyone! The late Sunday chatter posting here lol. Our weather has been quite variable - nights at or below freezing (0°C), to days anywhere from 6°C to 15°C or more with at least a bi5 of rain most days. Today it is overcast and 21°C feeling like 23°C.

I feel like I was quite busy with WikiTree this past week. I worked on Lianne’s tree for the challenge, then did some work on Mags’ tree for RAWK, did some work on my OPS, etc. In addition, Sandy P asked me if I would like to help with the Social Media posts. I won’t be creating the posts, just linking to them. So for a couple of weeks Azure is teaching me what to do. And I am not a social media whiz by any stretch of the imagination.

In other news, I am trying to finish a baby sweater to take to my knitting group tomorrow to be donated. I made a mistake yesterday and got so frustrated with it that I had to put it down and walk away at least twice. This week I also had to breakdown and buy a new iPad - my 4th in about 12 years but the first one I have had to buy. Ouch, they are not cheap, especially when you also get a cover than doubles as a keypad. I use my iPad for almost everything so it was a necessity.

Well, I’m off to do some more knitting. WikiTree will have to wait. Take care everyone! (((hugs)))
by Liza Gervais G2G6 Pilot (394k points)
Hi Lisa Congratulations on being asked to help with the social media posts, I'd be totally lost with it. I love knitting too, it use to keep me busy on the long train rides to and from work when I could get a seat. I'm sorry to say I haven't worked out how to use my ipad while on Wikitree and search sites too, I still use a desktop or a laptop.

Hi from a rather cool Melbourne. It seems we are getting colder at night a lot earlier than usual.

Homefront: It's been rather quiet this week after last week's excitement and with the weather turning colder at night we're all starting to sniffle.

WT: Quiet here too. I managed to finally finish this months sourcing, set and vetted the new challenge and finally managed a couple of days on the 2 war memorials I'm working on (mostly the same names on both so far). I'm having a little trouble finding a new hook for the challenge announement but I have - gee almost 5 hours to come up with something.

Thanks Pip for hosting again

Sorry short and sweet this week - need to find another box of tissues lol

I spent the wekend watching NFL drft.  Mizou had 8 players who attended the Combine.  6 got drafted.  The other two wre picked up as free agents within 24 hours of draft end.  A very good showing for Mizzou!

our youngest granddaughter was here Friday and Saturday.  Like her younger brother last week she played with her Dad's star wars toys.  I think they liked the idea they were playing with Daddy.

on a sad not, one of my friend's son died of cancer on Saturday.  He wwas 41 and went to same High school as my son who died at age 39 of cancer,  My heart breaks for their family.  Like Dan, Ryan left a young widow with small children behind.  Obviously we will do what we can to help them deal with the loss of Ryan.
