What does the Polish word "possydował" mean?

Dear Wkitree-ers,

I am researching the Kostrowicki family (connected to my cousins) and am translating an article by Jan Ciechanowicz. So far, Google translate has been reasonable, but it cannot deal with the last word in this phrase: "aż do roku 1662 jako szlachetnie urodzony obywatel possydował".

Could someone who speaks Polish kindly give me an idea of what "possydowal" means? I presume it's an archaicism or something.

Thanks, everyone!

Jonathan, I have tried a couple of translators other than Google, one Russian-built the other Polish-built, and do not get a translation that is of any use. I suspect the word is archaic or that there is a misspelling.

"possydować" or "posydować" is archaic form of "posiadać" - "to have" something, for example property, villages

Hi Robert

No screenshot - all I have is the web version of an article by Jan Ciechanowicz that has this quote: "Dom Kostrowickich jeszcze przed unią Litwy z Polską na Białej Rusi, a mianowicie w Województwie Mścisławskim rozkrzewiony, naypierwiey przez Jana Kostrowickiego w powiat lidzki przeniósł się, gdzie klucz Dzirwiański prawem zastawnym od xięcia Krzysztofa Korybuta Wiszniowieckiego, aż do roku 1662 jako szlachetnie urodzony obywatel possydował". That is a quote from the 2018 article by Jan Ciechanowicz, (quoting Central State Historical Archives of Lithuania in Vilnius, f. 391, from 1, No. 948, p 367-370). The article (about Apollinaire) is in Krynica 101, 2018, p 14-, which I got from the web at *https://kresy24.pl/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Kry-101_web.pdf.

I am particularly interested in the Skorynicze (Minsk) branch of the Kostrowicki family, if you can think of any sources of information.

It is in an old Polish meaning "he owned" or he "possesed".
