Adolph Hitler? No Profile?

Hi everyone!  I work with a girl that I was helping find her family.  I showed her how to use WikiTree and profiled many of her family to help her get started.

She has strong German roots.  So, I ran a connection between her and Adolph Hitler as a joke!  I couldn't find that he has been profiled!

You check, see if I missed something!  I'm not profiling him! Ain't going there!!!!!!  Bahahahahaah!!!!

Adolf Hitler

20 April 1889

30 April 1945

Born Braunau am Inn in Austria-Hungary

Hitler's father, Alois Hitler (1837–1903), was the illegitimate child of Maria Anna Schicklgruber

If you are interested, one of the more thorough treatments of Hitler’s ancestry is Koppensteiner, Rudolf, Die Ahnentafel des Führers [Adolf Hitler]. - (=Ahnentafeln berühmter Deutscher) This book (part of a series published in the 1930s) is hard to find as it is present in few libraries. Alfred Konder’s work, published somewhat later, is basically a rework of Koppensteiner’s, but is easier to find, and exists digitally.

Ok, I typed Adolph Hitler in as a new profile, with the correct information and it said I could proceed and create a new profile!   No wonder we get duplicate profiles!

Something ain't right!

Thanks for finding him!  Now I can proceed with teasing my co-worker!

I simply went to the surname page here and then entered Hitler as the surname. I then scanned the list for him. He was listed as the second person in the list.

So it appears that WikiTree didn't recognize Adolf and Adolph as the same name. sad

For me, this is one more example supporting me for repeatedly advising people to use Name Search before creating a new profile.

It is probably because you spelled the name ending with a “ph”. Unless a name is spelled exactly the same as the profile, or is listed in the variant name database, it will not show up as a match in the search results.

It's also possible that you entered a birth or death date that was more than two years different from the date on the WikiTree profile. That's another reason why duplicates often are missed.

However, I just visited WeRelate's Variant Names page, which WikiTree uses as its source for name variants. I discovered that it didn't have Adolf and Adolph as variants of the same name, so I added it there. Unfortunately, it is likely to be a few months before WikiTree picks up the info I added.

WikiTree could use the same search code in both places.

Yes, about Adolph, but it didn't recognize Hitler either!  When I try to create a Draper profile, it brings up surnames like Diver, Drake and other off the wall surnames!   But thanks for the head up on the name search thingy! wink

Valerie: WikiTree's matching algorithms do look at variant spellings that aren't on the profile, but only if the variants are in the variant names database borrowed from WeRelate.
David: I think that the spelling "Adolph" was the problem.

I tried an Add Person form for "Adolf" Hitler, died 1945, and WikiTree showed me his existing profile. But when I tried "Adolph" Hitler, died 1945, no existing profiles turned up.

There used to be a duplicate under Adolph (Hitler-27) but it was merged in 2017.

Rudolf and Rudolph are a similar pair, so I went to werelate.org and added them.
