Would You Like to Participate in a One Name Study? (Jan 2023)

A One Name Study (ONS) is a project which researches all occurrences of a surname, rather than a particular pedigree (ancestors of one person) or descendancy (descendants of one person or couple).

One of the foundations of WikiTree is our commitment to collaboration, so each project serves as a collaborative platform that may include anyone with the surname across the globe. From there, members and teams can branch out into specific areas of interest; such as geographically (e.g. SURNAMEs of England), by time period (e.g. SURNAMEs of the 18th Century), or by topic (e.g. SURNAME DNA, SURNAME Occupations, or SURNAME Statistics/Facts).

Are you ready to get started with a One Name Study?

  1. You can join an existing Name Study;
  2. You can adopt a Name Study that needs an ONS Coordinator; or
  3. You can start a new Name Study by emailing the ONS Project Leaders!

Stop by the One Name Study
project page for more information

Requirements to coordinate a study: 90 days of membership at WikiTree. There is also a limit of three studies per coordinator. See Name Study Coordinator Duties.

Requirements to participate in a study: Everyone is welcome to participate!

If you wish to begin a new one name study, please email the Project Leaders by clicking on the link highlighted in yellow above.  Thank you! If you respond, please let us know in your response which study you are interested in.

Hello.  I would like to co-ordinate a One Name Study in Quebec for Youngs between 1620 and 1849. I notice that the Young One-Name-Study project is currently empty.  I read that WikiTree is migrating sub-projects to project teams.   I would like to be the project co-ordinator for the Youngs_Of_Quebec sub-project/project-team.  I suppose this should be a geographic team nested under the Young surname project (which was empty).  Could someone guide me on how to set this up appropriately?  Thank you.

Hi Chris

I'm think there's been a misunderstanding.  ONS Project is not creating teams. Each study is global in scope  so some researchers may have created regional study pages to assist with organizing their data.  We will have a look at the Young study and get back to you with a proposed way forward.

Ok great thank you.  The Youngs of Quebec 1620 - 1849 is a manageable size and I am well versed in this.  I would like to create and co-ordinate this as a sub-project.

The page I read about some sub-projects transitioning to teams is here:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sub-Projects

Yes, many of the Topical/Geographic Projects have done this.  It works very well.  ONS has not adopted this though.

Re: "Southwick" ONS
[Note: no Profile Manager; "Southwick Sources" page orphaned]
1. Would every "Southwick" profile get a "One_Name_Study" tag or just those that are project protected?
2. Which profile date (birth or death) is used for the "200 year" project protected status qualification?
3. There are no "Southwick" surname sources on the Southwick Sources page...just surnames related to Southwick. And those don't ref. page #s (if any) in which Southwick is mentioned. Is this deliberate, for some reason?
4. Southwick Sources > "Locations" refer only to colonial Massachusetts. Does this ONS have restrictive research parameters that would preclude including my research of post-1750 Western New York / Northwestern Pennsylvania?

Thanks!

1.  Not every Southwick profile would get the sticker.  And the focus on who got it would be decided by the person running the ONS.  Privacy-protection has nothing to do with this.
2. Birthdate.
3.  You would have to ask the creator of the page for that one.  The page was created in 2019.  View the Changes tab to see edits.
4. Not necessarily.  It's just that the page-creator only had those particular areas to hand.
Thanks for your reply.

The Morse Name Study is active and would love new people

Actually, you don't even have to join.  If you are adding just a few Morse profiles, you can add the Morse one name study sticker.

I would like to be added to this group.  I am interested in doing a ONS on my last name and it's variations.

I am interested on becoming the leader of the Meuller name on the one-name project.
by Paul Miller G2G5 (6.0k points)

Hi Paul

Mueller Name Study already exists. You should join that study, as Meuller appears to be one of its variants, and we can only have a single study for a surname and all of its variants.

Thanks.

I am interested in starting a ONS to try to break through a brick wall I have on my 4th great grandfather Michael Greybill (Greybill-7).  His last name has many variants and I don’t know exactly which variant to request the study on.  Michael’s headstone has his last name as Grebill.  Graybill is another variant, along with Krehbiel, Krehbill, and Grabill.  What would you suggest?  Thanks.

Hi Kevin,

You should try to determine which of the variants is most widely used and that should be the main surname for the study. After you have decided, please email the Project Leaders by clicking on the link highlighted in yellow above.

Thanks.

I recently started a CLOSE study on WikiTree, having worked on the surname with the Guild of One-Name Studies for quite a few years.  Happy to collaborate with anyone else who has an interest in the CLOSE surname.

I would like to start a One Name Study for the surname Arlin. Also for the surname Sargent. If I should only choose one, then Arlin. Not much is known about this "family" before 1850.

Hi Debbie,

If you wish to begin new one name studies, please email the Project Leaders by clicking on the link highlighted in yellow above. Thank you!
Any ideas? The link doesn't work for me. I've tried several times over several days.
It works for me.

If you are still having problems, please send me a PM.

Thanks.

I would like to coordinate a One Name Study for Hemls, Helm, Elm, etc. I’m sure there are other variations but those are the ones I am aware of. I have looked at the list of other One Name Studies and have not seen this name listed as one that already has a coordinator but I could be wrong. I will also email the Project Leaders about this name.
