Was Fred raised as a girl?

Frederick is missing from the 1900 census, but there is a girl (Cleora) listed in his family in 1900 whose birth year doesn't match Fred's birth year, but the age strangely does. Cleora disappears after 1900 when Fred appears.

Fred later married and had a daughter, so he was definitely genetically male.

I've attached all documents to his profile.

Should I merge the profiles I created for Frederick and Cleora?

My bet is that the list of children was mangled by the census taker or by the person providing the information [which may not have been a family member]. Frederick's mother shows that she had 4 children, 3 still living, on both the 1900 and 1910 censuses. Maybe Cleora was the child who died [perhaps even a recent death], and the entry for the family in 1900 got messed up.

I would not merge Frederick and Cleora, but search births and deaths in Kansas or Illinois for evidence of Cleora or siblings. May never find it unfortunately, but you could leave a research note on her profile about the search and the theory.

Just my opinion. Hope that helps!

That makes the most sense.   Census takers made a lot of mistakes.
and given the mis-match between the year of birth and the age on the 1900 census, that does make the most sense. Thanks.
Thanks for the star!

According to the news article reporting George's death in 1904 he left a wife, two sons ages 6 and 11 and a daughter age 8.

Here is the Find-A-Grave for Cleora; George is buried next to her.

Your link to the news article doesn't seem to work for me, but the find-a-grave does confirm that Cleora died young.
Thank you!
Unfortunately there are too many men named "George L. Garrigu(e)s" around the same time.  The one in the article is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Garrigus-662, not https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Garrigus-457.

I just untangled these two who had become entangled because not only were they born a year apart, but they both moved from Indiana to Kansas with a sister named Mary. I only figured out they were different men through careful study of the Marys who thankfully were not born about the same time.

I know this article is the other one because it references a Brother "B. H. Garrigues".
Wow, these two guys really are confusing. How inconsiderate of them! But I'm glad you were able to get confirmation of little Cleoria's early death.
