Biography

Birth Jonathan Tracy, 3rd son of son of Lt. Thomas and "the widow Mason" Tracy, was born 21 February 1646, Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut. [1] According to Torrey he was born about 1640[2] which is unlikely as his parents are on record marrying in 1641. [3]

Marriage and Children Jonathan Tracy married Mary Griswold on 11 July 1672, Preston, New London, Connecticut. [4] Derivative vital records record the location as Saybrook, Connecticut and also as Norwichtown. [5] These records reflect the same physical location but changing boundaries. "Mary Tracy wife of Jonathan, Sr. age 55 yrs, born 1656, passed away at Norwich, Connecticut, 24 April 1711." [6]

Widower Jonathan Tracy married 2nd Mary Richards on 21 Aug 1711 at Preston. [7] She was baptized Beverly, Essex, Massachusetts Bay.[8] the daughter of John Richards and his wife, Elizabeth Woodbury.[9]

Town Service Jonathan Tracy was one of the original Preston settlers where he became the first town recorder; the first lieutenant of the trained band in 1690; he was a selectman in 1698; a deputy for Preston in the legislatures of 1699, 1700 and 1710; he was the first justice of the peace a position he held until his death in 1711. [10] [11]

Death Jonathan Tracy passed away soon after his second marriage in August of 1711[10] His Will was probated February 1711/12. Mentioned in the court administrative papers were: his widow Mary (Richards) Tracy; son Christopher Tracy, made estate administrator; two children of deceased eldest son Jonathan Tracy, Jr. (who d. 25 Feb 1704); dau Hannah (Tracy) Davison; dau Mary (Tracy) Parish; dau Meriam (Tracy) Clark; son David; son Samuel. Christopher Tracy; James Harris and Ebonezer Dart all of New London placed administrative bond in the estate of Jonathan Tracy on 12 February 1711/12. [12]

Research Notes

Generations of Jonathan Tracey's in the same local.

  • Jonathan Tracey, (Sr.), son of Thomas, b. 21 Feb 1646/7, Saybrook, CT.; m. Mary "Griswould" 11 Jul 1672 [5] ; m. 2nd Mary Richards 11 Jul 1672, Saybrook, CT.; d. prob. 1709 [see Torrey] but before his will was probated 1711/12 which names his children and 2nd wife. [13] Caution: d. date of 1704 precedes his town service ; Torrey, p.751, records his d. in 1709. -Note error with d. date of 25 Feb 1704/5, Preston VR's which is same d. date as his son Jonathan Tracy, Jr. the next record in the same vital record page (typed transcription record).
  • "Jonathan Tracey, (Jr.), son of Jonathan & Mary, b. 21 Feb 1674/5, Preston, CT." [5] ; m. "Annah Palmor" (Palmer) 11 Feb 1700/1 [5] see also, Torry, pg. 751; d. 25 Feb 1704, Preston, CT. [5]
  • "Jonathan Tracey, (3rd), son of Jonathan & Annah, b. 30 Nov 1702, Preston, CT." [5] ; m. 1st 19 Feb 1723, Amee Palmer ; m. 2nd Lucy Avery, 19 May 1747, Preston, CT.; d. 1777, Hartford county, CT. Will mentions sons Samuel, Perez, Moses and Israel Tracy, daughters Amy Tracy and Submit Hartshorn and Tracey Wilmot, Reuben Wilmot and Ashor Willmot. Witnesses, Robart Crary, Esq., Ens., John Morgan and Timothy Palmer. [14]
  • "Jonathan Tracey, (IV), son of Jonathan & Amee, b. 11 Apr 1741, Preston, CT." [5]
Cousin lineage from Johnathan Tracy, Sr. b. 1646:
  • Jonathan Tracey, b. 16 Dec 1713, Preston, CT. son of Christopher & Lidia Tracy [15] Note Christopher was a son of Jonathan Tracy, Sr. b. 1646. This Jonathan relocated to Falmouth, Cumberland, ME. where he m. Abigail Riggs and they relocated to Guildsboro, Hancock, ME.

Error date for death of Jonathan Tracy, Sr. as seen in the "Connecticut Vital Records (The Barbour Collection, 1630-1870)" which are reissued, typed vital records, show both Jonathan Sr. and Jonathan (Jr.) dying on the same day in sequential records although Jonathan, Sr. was in town public service up through 1710. The record in mention reads as follows:

  • Jonathan Tracy, d. 25 Feb 1704 [quoting from Vol.1:13]
  • Jonathan Tracy, Sr. d. 25 Feb 1704 [quoting from Vol.1:37]

Note that in addition to his town service through 1710 and the date of his probated Will (Apr. 1711/12) source Stackpole (p.265) records his death as being in 1711.

Second wife, Mary Richards. A prior version of this profile included a comment about the second marriage, "[Caution Richards probably isn't her maiden name.]" His second wife was Mary Richards, daughter of John Richards and Elizabeth Woodbury.[16][17]

Caution. 20th c. Vanity Genealogy publications assert that the family line of Lt. Thomas Tracy has direct links line to royal ancestry, and that this family line came from Gloucestershire, England. These are assertions which have been disproven by scholarly research. Refer to profile Thomas Tracy

Identity of his second wife as Mary Richards, daughter John Richards and his wife, Elizabeth Woodbury, published in Mayflower Descendant, 2020. See Susan Kilbride, "The Identity of Elizabeth (Richards) Standish and the Richards Family of Beverly, Massachusetts, and Preston, Connecticut," Mayflower Descendant 68 (2020):187–191, at 190; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors.

Reports Mary Richard married (1) at Preston, 21 August 1711, Jonathan Tracy, as his second wife; married (2) 3 September 1717, Eleazer Jewett.

This identity, citing above Mayflower Descendant, 2020, followed in David Curtis Dearborn and John Bradley Arthaud, "William^1 Woodbury of Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts," New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 175 (2021):207-222, in particular, 215-216 (Elizabeth Woodbury Richards). The Summer 2021 issue is available for download by subscription at AmericanAncestors.

Susan Kilbride (2020) includes footnote (p. 190n), reporting that Frederic Clare Jewett (1908, ... the Jewetts of America) "incorrectly states that Mary Richards was the daughter of Francis Griswold of Norwich." Kilbride further writes, "Mary Griswold was the name of Jonathan Tracy's first wife."

So, Kilbride, followed by Dearborn and Arthaud, reports Jonathan Tracy married twice--first to Mary Griswold, and second to Mary Richards. Mary (Richards) Tracy married (2) Eleazer Jewett.

Does he need Project protection?

Anne, I'm responding for the PM because he doesn't appear to be active at this time. Thank you for the project protection suggestion. So far no-one has attempted to add the claim about royal ancestor descent to this profile although said claim is in several secondary sources and all sorts of heraldic COA's are posted to personal family lines in Ancestry.com. I imagine the profile protection surrounding his father is the reality check safe-guarding this particular son although I can't blame folks for 'having the dream'. Don't we all at some level of our imagination.  :-)
