Charles was born in Merrill, Lincoln, Wisconsin on 26 Apr1902[1].

Name

Charles's name at birth was Charles Hubert Swope.[1]
Charles changed his surname to Anderson about 1922. (see research notes)

  1. Charles married Edna Lee Barnhart at the King County courthouse in Seattle, King, Washington on 24 Nov 1926 in the presence of John H. and Mable Bissell.[2] The Bissell's were Edna's mother and step-father.
  2. Charles married Alys Hutchinson at the home of Rev. Stella Wallace in Seattle, King, Washington on 6 Feb 1944 in the presence of her mother.[3]
  3. Charles married Cloa Odessa Poff at Greenwood Presbyterian Church in Seattle King, Washington at 10:30 am on 3 Sep 1949 in the presence of James J. Savage and Billie Bartee.[4]

  • Charles is the same person as Charles Hubert Anderson.
  • I have spent considerable time tracing back some of my current DNA matches for my unknown grandfathers family. I can isolate these matches to this grandfather because I have maternal 1st cousin matches to eliminate my mothers side. I also have known 2nd cousin matches for my fathers mother. What is left must therefore have a high likelihood of belonging to my Charles Anderson's line. A paternal 1st cousin has been DNA tested and has the same matches I do effectively eliminating any unknown lines on my mothers side.
  • There are two surnames that consistently show up in the family trees of this group of DNA matches. They are Swope and Zastrow. I have built a family tree from what I have found. What was revealed is a marriage between Miles Elmer Swope 1863-1925 and Rosalie Zastrow 1878-1922. Further, all of the Swope matches I worked tree up to Miles grandfather Ezra Swope 1805-1883. Additionally, all of the Zastrow matches I traced back had Rosilie's father Albert August Frederick Herman Zastrow 1829-1921 as a common ancestor. With over two dozen Swope and Zastrow DNA matches I must conclude it is not an anomaly and I am related to both Swope and Zastrow. Therefore, so is Charles Anderson.
  • Rosalie Swope died 23 May 1922 leaving her 60 year old husband with Charles and 3 other minor children Hilton (15), Virginia(13) and Collins(10). Perhaps Charles was not happy with the arrangement which probably entailed taking care of his younger siblings while his father was at work. Perhaps he wanted to enlist but his father refused to give his permission. Perhaps Charles enlisted the help of his uncle John Howard Swope and aunt Gertrude nee Anderson and they falsified the paperwork or vouched for him to help him enlist giving him the Anderson name.
  • Why would he change his birth date to 1901? The age of majority in 1922 was 21 years of age. He enlisted 16 Oct 1922. If he was Charles Swope at birth he would only be 20 years old and would need parental permission to enlist.
  • I can find no trace of Charles Hubert Swope after 1920. I can find no trace of Charles Hubert Anderson before his enlistment in the Army on 16 Oct 1922.
  • What is the likelihood of a Charles Hubert Anderson and a Charles Hubert Swope born in the same town the same date a year apart?
  • What would Occam's razor tell us?
