Biography

Mary "Polly" Pigg was born in 1796 to William Pigg and Mary "Polly" Fields.

Marriage

Polly Pigg married Elijah McWhorter on 13 Jun 1811 in Clay County, Kentucky.[1]

1850 U.S. Census

In 1850 Elijah McWhorter, age 60, lived with his family in Clay County, KY.[2] He was born in Virginia, and the rest of the family members were born in Kentucky.

With him lived:
  • Mary McWhorter (64) If she was 64 in 1850, her birth date would have been 1786, not 1796 as given on her memorial. The age is handwritten clearly on the 1850 Census document.
  • Perry McWhorter (27)
  • Sarah McWhorter (18)
  • Lucretia McWhorter (13)

Elijah and Perry were listed as farmers. The value of real estate is $900, written next to Perry's name, so perhaps this was his farm and his parents lived with him. The household enumerated immediately before this one is a household headed by Mary McWhorter, age 20, with a three-month old son named George.

United States Census, 1870

Name: Isaac Benge
Census Year: 1870
Event Place: Hanses Store, Clay County, Kentucky, United States
Race: White
Family members, all born in Kentucky, were
  • Isaac Benge, age 37
  • Sarah Benge, age 37
  • Mary Benge, age 13
  • Robert Benge, age 7
  • Lucy A Benge, age 2
  • Mary McWhorter, age 77. Mary could read but could not write.[3]
Mary (Polly) McWhorter must have been Sarah's mother, who married Isaac Benge. Her age and birth dates vary from one record to another.

Burial

Elijah and other McWhorter family members are buried in the Ben Hacker Cemetery. A memorial marker for Elijah McWhorter and Polly Pigg McWhorter in the Ben Hacker Cemetery says Elijah McWhorter was born in 1790 and died in 1866 and Polly Pigg McWhorter was born in 1796 and died in 1872. [4][5][6]

Mary Polly was born in 1796. Mary Polly Pigg ... She passed away in 1872.
