Several years ago in a phone conversation with me great-aunt (Green's youngest child Jesse Lorine) she stunned me by mentioning that rumor had it that Ballard Preston Pettry was not Green Lee's biological father. Instead, the father was a Lilly - no first name given.

The records indicate that Green Lee Pettry was born to Elvira Walker Lane on June 7, 1865 - one week after Ballard officially married Elvira (May 30, 1865). Were Ballard and Elvira uncertain of the paternity of the child? Or was Ballard the father of Green, but the War between the States and his commitment to the Union Army prevented them from marrying sooner? Or did Ballard know that the child she carried was not his, but married her anyway, to "make her an honest woman"?

In any event, the marriage to Elvira did not last long, for only eighteen months later, Ballard married his first cousin Ardelia Gore Pettry (December 28, 1866.)

Descendants of Green Lee Pettry and Estaline Mirick still share Pettry DNA because Estaline was a Pettry through her mother Ingabo (Ballard's sister.) But if our DNA strands linked to Ballard Pettry are shorter and fewer than we would expect, perhaps this explains it.

In addition, it might also help explain why MyHeritage.com reveals people with the last name Lilly sharing some DNA with me. Or not. Who knows?

By the way, my mother and Jesse Lorine said that Green Lee was a "salt of the earth" type of person.
