Biography

England Orphan Team
Louis Ogden II has completed the England Project's Post 1700 Orphan Trail I.

Louis is the son of Robert Vincent Ogden and Kate Crocker McFerrin. He was born at a clinic in Winshire, Jefferson County, Texas on 11 August 1950. Winshire and its clinic no longer exist. They were located just over the county line, halfway between Winnie (Chambers County) and Hampshire (Jefferson County). At the time of his birth, his parents were residents of Winnie, Chambers County, Texas.

Louis attended East Chambers Elementary, Junior High and High School, in Winnie, Texas, graduating in 1968. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1972. He later earned a MS degree in Engineering Management from the University of Alaska in Anchorage in 1978. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.

Louis married Sheila, his high school sweetheart, on 22 August 1970 in Winnie, Texas. As of this writing, they have been happily married for fifty-one years and blessed with one daughter and one granddaughter.

After graduating in 1972, Louis went to work for Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), starting in Dallas, Texas, then moving on to assignments in Tulsa (twice), Anchorage, Southern California, and again back in Dallas. In his sixteen years with ARCO, Louis gravitated into the design and construction of oil field facilities, known as project management in that industry. Notable assignments included a stint as a facility construction engineer for the North Slope facilities at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and as an engineering design manager for a gas plant in Dubai.

Following ARCO, Louis worked almost exclusively overseas, working as a project manager, first with Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia, then with the various precursor companies of Worley, an Australian based engineering and construction company. Over the years, Sheila and Louis lived in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the Philippines, Venezuela, and London. Louis ended full time employment in 2005 but continued as a consultant to Worley until he finally retired in 2015. During his consultancy, Sheila stayed home in Sugar Land, Texas, while Louis had rotational assignments in Iraq, the Ukraine, Oman, Brazil and South Africa.

In 1961, eleven-year-old Louis accompanied his Mom on a genealogical research trip to Tennessee. Something about that trip caused his Mom to recognize him as a budding genealogist, as she made it clear on her deathbed that Louis was to have her genealogical records. Those records sat in their storage boxes for almost 30 years, until he finally caught the bug around 1990. Now in retirement, and much to Sheila’s irritation, he spends every available minute with his research.

Hi Louis,

I just noticed that your Y-DNA test and that of John Conrad Ogden showed up on my maternal grandfather Emery Ogden's profile. I checked my uncle [Living] Ogden's Y-DNA test in Family Tree DNA and you both show up as matches for him. His kit is #528662. It's good to have the paper trail confirmed back so far.

Best wishes, Kevin

Kevin: Great to hear from you. I don't know how to find a person on FTDNA with just the kit number, but I am pretty sure from your tree that your uncle did a 37 marker test back in 2016, and at 37 markers he is only one genetic step distance step from me. It is great to make your acquaintance, and I suspect you may be able to extend your line back even further. I and several others of our Ogden cousins have taken the BigY test and we can now confidently show results that prove our line back to Richard Ogden (Ogden-4670). Many of these folks are living, so I won't post their names here, but send me an email and I will happily share these results. My email is [email address removed] Regards--Louis

Hi Louis,

I've added a source and some extracts for the will of Eleanor (Meux) Okeden, the wife of William Okeden. I looked at your uploaded pdf "The apparent sons of Philip Okeden" and saw that it looks like you missed that source. I'm not convinced that Philip was the adoptive father of William Okeden, though the records do make it confusing. To add one point (regarding the IPM for Philip), as far as I'm aware the term "nephew" during this time period also meant a grandchild.

One more William Okeden profile will need to be created, though I'm not sure how you want to disentangle the current William Okeden (who is currently both son of John and husband of Eleanor). The will of John Okeden does not name a son William, so that William would have died by 1557. The husband of Eleanor Meux was probably the William whose administration was taken in 1594 shortly before Eleanor wrote her will, and who was the 'son of Philip' from John's will and Philip's IPM.

Eleanor's will conflicts with the pedigree given in "The History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset vol. 3", though there are other issues in that pedigree so its not too suprising.

Maddy--Thanks for reaching out. I am well satisfied with my current project team choices. I would have liked to have gained OT2 status, but was disappointed in the choices available to me to qualify. As it is, I am quite happy to manage my own profiles and contribute to associated profiles whenever I have something to add.

Regards--Louis

Hi, W. I don't have much on David Logan, other than him as Elizabeth McPherron's husband.

I have a marriage record for David Logan and Peggy McPherron getting married on 10 Aug 1803 in Greene County, Tennessee. (Greene County Clerk, Marriage Register)

There is also a gravestone transcription in Richmond, Virginia, for an Elizabeth which reads: "Here lies Elizabeth Logan, the spouse of David Logan, who departed this life December 4th, 1804, aged 33 years and 9 months." I assume this is the right Elizabeth. (The Annals and History of Henrico Parish, Diocese of Virginia: and St. John's P.E. Church). I figure David's marriage with Priscilla Woolsey came after this date, which seems to fit with what I know of their children's' births.

The will of her brother John McPherron (dated 30 Jan 1821) names his "nephew James Logan." It also names a "Tom Logan" who figures prominently, but his relationship unclear. I have not places Tom. (I have an transcription of the will, but the citation is incomplete and I haven't found the original online)

The last record is in "The History of Allen County, Ohio, and Representative Citizens," available online. On page 705, the children of James McPheron are identified. Included are "William and Betsey, the later of whom became the wife of David Logan."

As for the second David Logan/Elizabeth McPherron marriage, the county histoy also mentions that. On the same page, it says that William McPheron (the first Elizabeth's brother) had a daughter named "Elizabeth who married David Logan and died in Indiana." I have a marriage record for then" Elizabeth McPherson m. David Logan on 27 Sep 1832 in Champaign County, Ohio. (transcription of Court house records)

All this detail and more is in my Ancestry.com tree. See the link on the profile for Elizabeth McPherron-38. If you do not have access to Ancestry.com. please let me know and I can send you a link to my data.

As these are branches of a branch of my ancestor, I have not entered a full biography of an of the children of James McFerron-6, but I may do so in this case to clarify for others. Please let me know what you think.

Regards--Louis

Do you have any evidence for David Logan (the father https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Logan-2993) marrying a woman named Elizabeth McPherron? His son David Logan https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Logan-2997 married Elizabeth McPherron (a different woman) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McPherron-10. It also seems David Logan senior would have had 2 wives at the same time. I think there is a mixup in the records
