Samuel notable in many regions of early North America. His impact crosses over the now Canadian-American border. Forced to leave his Woodbridge, New Jersey home with wife and 9 children and flee to New York in 1777 as a result of a refusal to fight in the American Revolutionary War, he then found his way to Halifax Nova Scotia and then to Wilmot in the Annapolis Valley, his New Jersey house and land confiscated.
Being a well-known and genial host in Wilmot, he was a centerpoint of Quaker Meetings across this portion of Nova Scotia. However, he decided around 1810 to leave Nova Scotia, and head to Upper Canada, where with resources gained from sales of holdings in Nova Scotia, he was able to buy numerous farms and establish his family there. His is buried in the Quaker North Norwich Pioneer Cemetery in Norwich, Ontario, Canada.[1]
